Medical Emergency While Flying

10/15/2015 11:31 AM

Should airlines carry a doctor for treating passengers in a medical emergency to one or more passengers?. Are air hostesses trained in first aid sufficient and handle any situation?. Should insurance companies pay compensation to passengers if aircraft doesn't provide a doctor in midflight but interrupt flight to land in an unscheduled spot causing inconvenience to all of its passengers?.

As if the cost of flying isn't high enough already! The airline isn't responsible for your health, you are. If you suddenly require acute medical care, the plane will land at the nearest airfield that can handle it, and YOU will be responsible for the minimum $25,000 that it costs to divert the aircraft for your benefit.

Maybe you would also like (and be willing to pay for) a lawyer on each flight to assist in arbitrating disputes between passengers and crew!?

Not sure if they can carry enough fuel to circle while the Doctor's staff makes an appointment for you to see him/her in two weeks.

Retired Doctors in different countries could be arranged on part time basis voluntarily by providing free meals and hotel during different stages of long distance flights.

Why? What is the probability of being on a flight where a medical emergency required a doctor?

Nowadays many even kids suffer from diabetes, kidney problems,BP,heart condition etc therefore more doctors, medications, hospitals etc are required. In land it is easy locate one but while flying it might take several hours to find one without inconveniencing other passengers.

It would easier and cheaper to require all passengers have a medical clearance to fly.

In my many years of flying I was on only one flight where there was a medical emergency that required a forced landing. The plane simply lands at the nearest available airport and is met by emergency personnel.

In this case there were three doctors on board who answered the pilot's query "Is there a doctor onboard?", they examined the guy and informed the pilot that the condition was not life threatening and the pilot cancelled his descent and climbed back up to cruising altitude, in his third announcement to the passengers he quipped "Well folks, it looks like our sick passenger just saved $25,000 in emergency landing costs. That should make him feel well enough to get to our original destination with minimal delay!" EMS personnel met the plane on the tarmac.
