When Michael Dell regained control of Dell, I thought that was foolish.

The margins of home computers are so thin that the only way to make money is innovation.

Steve Jobs saw that, but what is Dell going to do, while Apple sets the trend, is Dell going to chase the latest trends Apple has set. That would be a poor business model.

So, bottom line, EMC is what Dell needed if it has any chance to survive.

They will make a lot of money on the backs of the employees!

Isn't that what employees are for? The company enriches their lives and they make the company money... Last I checked, that was called capitalism.

Well, look at it like changing divisions - they just went from NCAA D1 to the Pros and will now be directly competing with the likes of IBM, HP, Cisco, etc. at the Enterprise-level. So... having said that, my thoughts are they better have a new play book and a management group that is ready for the change.

Also, the above not withstanding - they also have the negative of not picking up a lot of 'new' customers from competitors since those that bought Dell, augmented with EMC anyway. In other words, Dell and EMC have really been partners so it's not like they just bought their competition and gained market share.

Add that VMware is still independent and publicly traded which sequesters that revenue stream and I see a lot of impact to Organizational Strategy and Structure and not a lot of additional revenue.

Plus - layoffs have to be inevitable as there is a lot of skill-set overlap between the two so now there is a morale issue. Not to mention merging two different cultures and internal business management systems.

We'll see... it will be a good Case Study for an upcoming MBA student to watch how it plays out.

Feeding time for money makers where the BIG-ones eat up the little-ones. So, who's the BIG one here, DELL or EMC?

I believe EMC is the mammoth here..:) I personally think that Dell stepped in cloud industry a little bit late and I saw that several Fortune contributors agree with me regarding this aspect.
