Sound Waves Used to Manipulate Cells

01/26/2016 9:36 AM

Most people don't understand that sound waves do much more than produce the noises we hear on a daily basis but the pressure differential that cause sound can now be used to manipulate cells. Engineers from MIT, Penn State University and Carregie Mellon University have created a way of maneuvering cells in three dimensions using the newly developed acoustic tweeters. Check out the article in the below link.

They can also be used to break up kidney stones...Having had this procedure I can tell you it's much preferable to just passing the stones, although quite expensive....

Forces on the suspended cells to counteract gravity and move the particles are caused by the scattering of the sound waves from the cell. (The cells are much smaller than the wavelength of the sound.)

When standing waves are set up in a fluid medium, particles suspended in the medium are attracted to either the pressure nodes or pressure antinodes depending on the acoustic contrast factor of the particles.
