Home computer self starting twice or more per day.

02/24/2016 2:55 PM

Need a hand figuring this out.

My older i7, windows 7, Asus board, pc keeps starting at close to 10:00 am and pm.

It has started at other random times but this is every day.

I have tried watching the task manager as fast as I cam log on but no unusual activity or processes. Chrome has had some memory allocation that didn't show up on the CPU but nothing else.

Don't know it win7 has a syslog but I have not been able to find one.

There is a fresh reload of limited software when I put in the SSD.

It does not shut the computer back down.

My old copy of the OS is on my old platter drive in bulk storage.

If I was running NT4.5 I would track it down and kill it. But I just haven't kept up with all the bloatware OS with no need.

Thanks for your time

Not sure about the 'random' boots, other than possibly Wake-on-LAN, or Wake on Magic Packet. That could mean someone is trying to hack your computer.

As for the regular 10:00 am/pm, that is most likely in the BIOS. Some have settings to wake up your computer (or put it to sleep) at specific days & times. I have used that functionality to have my engineering workstation boot-up ~ 1/2 hour before I reach the office. That way it has already gone through boot-up, loading of drivers...

If all else fails it might be an issue with the wifi AISuite3 software....you can remove it...is this a z87 pro MB? Seems to be a glitch...

Sounds like a likely candidate. GA

It is a X58 Sabertooth.

My 1366 i7 cpu was fine but my ultra durable 3 died.

Hard to find non workstation boards for the 1366.

Looks like it will be this weekend before I can dig into it. Too much work to do.

PSU may be the culprit.

Random restarts? - Sounds like a possible overheating somewhere. CPU, graphics card or power supply. As a first step clean out all dust bunnies and make sure all fans will run. This has happened to me and a good cleaning with a can of air cleared it up. It happens more frequently if you have carpeting and/or pets. Arrgh - too many cats!

He did say "Random starts" didn't he. It's kind of like the reciprocal of a Cavalier - random no starts.

Not sure about random starts!

Found it buried in the Task Scheduler.

Windows media center updates has the rights to start my computer twice per day and check for updates or so it says. Probably DRM.

Even as admin it will not let me change it.

Don't care that it checks just not Wake my computer. It is not loud but it wakes me.

Going to do some more digging because the times are close but not exact.

I can disable it but then I get no updates. Can't have that, Windows hasn't been out of beta since NT4.5.

Glad you found it. Knowing what is a first step to 'fixing' (he wrote tongue in cheek) it.

Might try going to services, and setting task scheduler to manual.

Now I will just have to figure out how to turn that part off without breaking it.

Bloatware, If I could run Star Citizen on Linux I wouldn't use windows.
