Coolpad Arise and Scratch Wireless Hack?

03/09/2016 11:37 AM

I bought a Coolpad Arise from Scratch Wireless because they offered free service by WiFi. A month later they changed their mind and said I would have to buy "passes" for voice or data. I've been fooling around to see what I can do without passes. I loaded Skype unto the phone and can use that at home to make voice calls. But it doesn't seem to work at other hot spots. Wonder why? I can usually get to the internet at home but out on the town the phone keeps dropping the WiFi I select or changing to another hot spot on it's own. Is that normal or is Scratch messing with me?

Scratch is no help at all. They can't or won't reveal any info on what they may have done to the phone to restrict my activities.

I'm a novice. This is my first smartphone and I'm just poking in the dark. Would appreciate any hacking help.

Here's what you bought, looks like you need to become proficient in the Android operating system but you may find some Coolpad hacking forums on the web to guide you.

It's interesting that the "free" ads are still running months after Scratch reneged on their deal.

Hard to justify charging for voice-over-wifi. That doesn't use anyone's network and costs Scratch nothing.

"E pluribus unum".

Out of many choices, one is always worst.

TracFone.com - TRACFONE ┬« Wireless‎

We got one of these for our 10 and 11 YO boys. We make them take them when they go out to play. They sit on the charger the rest of the time.

Yeah, I got suckered by the free, no plan, no contract...too good to be true. I think Scratch may be gone in a year.

Lock, I need to warn anyone who may wander onto this thread and think "gee, I should try one of those Coolpads!" As a smartphone, it makes a good paperweight. I think they found a box of Intel 4004 microprocessors (circa 1971) and figgered no one would know the difference. Speed? The solitaire game can't keep up with my finger. Reliability? The Coolpad slows and stops at random. The camera takes very artsy fuzzy pics. The battery is good for 30 minutes. And it is a dandy hand warmer; I could sit my coffee cup on it to stay hot. At $80, I figger it is overpriced by, oh, $80.
