Ford VIN Number

04/14/2016 12:15 AM

Hi All , I have a 1996 OBS Ford F 250 Powerstroke diesel , does the vin# indicate the serial number of the original factory installed motor if there is a serial number? In other words , how can I determine if the motor is the original ? And where can I locate the motor serial number ? Thanks

Have you searched Google, etc.

That's your best bet.

VIN's are widely published and a good source for recall information.

Check some Ford forums.

On my 2000 Ford F-150 there is no published correlation between the VIN and the engine's serial number. The factory would (or should) 'know' that information, but I have no idea if it is retrievable or if it even exists any more.

I'd be looking for evidence that the motor mounts have been disturbed, i.e. tool marks on the bolts, rust proofing scraped off, etc. Not too many people can pull an engine without leaving some evidence behind.

"Serial number is located just behind and above the oil filter on the engine boss where the oil cooler bolts on. It's also located on the valve cover sticker, along with the HP rating."

VIN Decoder...

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/vindecoder.php

"Starting in 1968 Ford started stamping the last 6 of the VIN on the engine block.
It's right behind the intake manifold on top of the block. There is a small flat area of the block visible between the transmission and intake manifold, its right there. Takes some cleaning to read it."

Unable to verify if this is correct or not....

I am unaware of Ford putting the SN of the vehicle on the engine. Is far as I know the only thing you can do to see if the engine is original is see if all the casting date codes on engine components precede the date code for vehicle assembly. This is all Ford owners can do to verify numbers matching. No way to tell if the engine is original.

In the UK, all these numbers should be on form V5, which also indicates the name of the current keeper of the vehicle.
