This is only the beginning of the claims against insurance and wrongful death lawsuits that will result from cars for idiots.

Lawyer: "Mam, what were you doing as your new Dingbat Self Drive 9000 ran down the 25 innocent victims on the sidewalk?"

Defendant: "Well, I was doing what I do every day on the way to play Bridge with the girls. Talking to Velma, texting Brenda, putting on my make-up and having tea. Oh, and Judge Judy was on the TV. I just LOVE her!"

Maybe they should give a written test on how the features work and caveats pertaining to the general operation of this vehicle....

Well we got approval on the financing but you failed the operators test.....sorry, you can try again tomorrow....

Is it any surprise that user error caused this? People couldn't safely operate power windows without accidentally killing themselves in them, so as more autonomous control is introduced there are bound to be issues with the real problem - the people.

The important thing is no one was hurt.

People can't even drink a cup of coffee without hurting themselves - so now we have warning notices for coffee!

Tesla's going to have to go to the "people are dummies" mode of thinking. Each time the driver activates one of their special programs, the car will have to give them a verbal notice of what they've done and the risks involved.

Tesla owners will be required to have BOTH:

a) a valid driver's license and

b) an IQ-score above 100

...or equivalent.

I thought we solved the transportation problem for idiots a long time ago.

Wasn't it called public transportation as in 'get your dumb ass on the bus'?

You all appear to be assuming that this was not in fact a software issue.

The article states that the company has the device in "beta" at present.

This implies that there are likely still bugs to be ironed out....Perhaps this is one such bug.

As is usual with Beta bugs, the company will deny their existence until the cows come home.

True, but at least Tesla isn't (yet) making owners PAY (again) to get software bugs/corrections...as MicroStuff™ has always done.

I don't know of any auto manufacturer that doesn't send most of its products out with numerous components devices and systems in 'Beta stage'.

The only difference is Tesla at least admitted it up front.

I had a 1981 Audi 4000S. I bought it used for $2000 and drove it for a couple years. Deadly slow 5 cylinder engine, automatic transmission and the worst electrical system. It ate alternators every 6-9 months. Sometimes it would stop charging. Once it let the voltage run into the high teens.

I actually got in a bad accident, where I hit a Toyota pick-up truck at around 35-40 mph. The truck was pulling out of a parking lot trying to get into the left turn lane. The impact was so bad, my textbooks went through the glove box door (they were sitting on the passenger's seat). Needless to say, my Audi was totalled. That was around 1991 and to this day, I still have stiffness in my neck/shoulders from the accident.
