Ride and Drive: Mitsubishi Outlander

05/18/2016 5:42 PM

Of the vehicles I get to test drive, every so often, based on features, technology, or value, there is one that stands out. One of these is the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 SEL that I drove recently for a week. The model is highly revamped from the previous year.

Simply put, here is an SUV with room for seven, all wheel drive (AWD), a smooth ride, and just under 30 mpg on the highway (27.2 mpg overall for 650 miles)--priced at $33,095 loaded, including destination/handling. Base price is $26,995 for this five star U.S. government safety rated vehicle.

The outstanding mileage for a vehicle this size comes from an ECO drive mode for the 166 hp four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission. Warranty for this powertrain is 10 years or 100,000 miles. Electric power steering adds to economy and handling.

Included in the optional SEL touring package are: Navigation, forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, land departure warning, auto headlight dimming, windshield wiper de-icer, and both power liftgate and folding side mirrors.

The Outlander from oft-forgotten Mitsubishi is worthy of consideration if one wants room and AWD with economy.
