Type of Spray Used in Oil & Gas Industry

06/15/2016 9:13 AM

Dear All,

Please advise what's the type of coating used for Monel, or Inconel coatings - mainly used in submersible pumps, downhole casings, tubing, and flow lines in oil and gas industry.

Is it High Velocity Oxy-Fuel Thermal Spraying, or other types ?

Thanks in Advance,

Dler

Ask your material supplier or your on-site engineer.

Is it common to add coatings to materials that are already corrosion-resistant?

If there is a possibility for erosion maybe?

Its quiet clear if you realise that the material for the coating is Monel or Inconel.

Mind that Teflon coating and Epoxy coatings are also being used.

The metal coatings are usually done with arc spraying technology.

the link shows the blast coating (which is for Monel coating as per the website).

but you mentioned "Metal Coatings" done by arc spraying, is the "Arc Coatings" same as "Blast Coatings" ?

by the way, Teflon and epoxy not used for protection against corrosion, and usually we use it for coating the stages of the ESPs (inside not outside).

I saw some comments asking why we need to coat materials that already corrosion resistant.

My question was, what is the type of coatings (blast, spray, HVOF,,, etc.) used to Coat material that is not corrosion resistant such as CS with a material that is resistant to corrosion such as Monel or Inconel.

cheers

Blast coating does not seem to be used for metal spray coatings. The energy in the blast will not be enough to create the metal to metal bond. Search for thermal spray. Cold spray probably the closest to blast coating.
