What are the limitations of humans and space travel ?

No reason why we cant use artificial gravity and grow food...as per loads of sci fi stories and 2001. What is missing is a compelling reason to do it.Psychological problems and the journey time are probably as significant as anything else.

Just a few reasons I could think of.

I think I've read the biggest detriment to space travel is cosmic radiation. Protection is very heavy and therefore very expensive because of the costs of getting it into space. Cosmic radiation causes genetic damage that likely would lead to cancer.

Limitations of humans in space travel: #1. Practical Human life time. Say, 25 years for education, 20 years travel + 20 years return (it would be nice to try and return, wouldn't it?). #2. Fuel for propulsion for 20 to 40 years. #3. food supply, during travel and also for the duration of the surface duration. Currently, it's all Humans can do to get to Mars. Where else in the solar system would we want to send humans, when elecrto-mechanical probes do such a good job with photography and data transmission (Thank you, NASA)? Have you noticed how many countries have sent working surface explorer probes, and distant photo/data probes to another satellite or planet in our solar system? Maybe it's not as easy as one might think!!!!

Until someone proves him wrong, Einstein, is the greatest obstacle to space travel. We must exceed the speed of light to travel abroad. Second is radiation. Third is collision with interstellar matter.

This is just speculation, but I suspect it is possible to travel perhaps 10 light years without aging more than a month or two and without exceeding the speed of light. At those speeds, our physical bodies and spacecraft might behave more like wave energy than solid objects. Radio and TV waves collide all the time without being destroyed.

In the case of this human it's patience. I've no time for space travel as long as it focusses attention and resources away from dealing with the serious terrestrial problems facing us. And burdens our atmosphere with another lot of pollution.

I should think the biggest limitation, other than having your luggage lost on Saturn - c'mon, you know USAir will, is that humans are a pretty inefficient payload. We can send robots (no, not poor Robbie - something closer to the Mars Rovers) a lot easier. No worry about lifetime, food, radiation, or the Horta.
