Might be. A simple phone call to Topcon would confirm it one way or the other.

You really don't want to publish an email address, Matey. You'll be bombarded with spam until it becomes unusable.

RTFM, especially the part in the manual about replacing the batteries when they get used up. Is this thing rechargeable?

What kind of batteries are required? How many? What order? What polarity?

It looks like you got some good feed back on Land Surveyors United. And it seems you answered your question, " .... so i am thinking it might be the display. Fingers crossed i hope it does not need replacing the display but am suprised they all died at the same time. It is a dual display. They were working initially but i may have turned on the heating switch to heat the dispplay panel. I dont know if this would have damaged both. ???? "

Sounds like you smoked the display, so asking the same question here on CR4 will not change the end result.

In the Topcon GTS 4 instruction manual "Forward Section" General Handling Precautions,

#3 Do not expose instrument to direct sunlight for long periods. Never leave the instrument in extreme heat longer than necessary.

Also on LSU, you mentioned, " I JUST BOUGHT A TOPCON GTS 4 TOTAL STATION. I KNOW IT IS A VERY OLD MODEL."

If this unit still has Ni-cad batteries, chances are the batteries are bad.

If all else fails, have it "Factory Repaired" Calibrations are to critical for a novice to under take

Sounds like a dead memory back-up battery. Sad news. He might get lucky though, and have a program that is hard-burned into non-volatile RAM?

As the old saying goes; You Get What You Paid For Like used cars, you could be buying somebody else's heartaches
