Allen Bradley PLC Program Writer

09/13/2016 4:30 PM

Looking for Allen Bradley PLC programming support in the DC/MD/VA region. We have piece of equipment that has bugs in the programming that we need to be looked at and possibly modified.

Thank you

Bugs... in the program... looked at and possibly modified? So, replace the existing bugs with new ones? Should be no shortage of people who are capable of this.

Okay, okay, enough of that. Are your in-house programmers not up to the task? Is the PLC model (plural?) in place today appropriate to control the troublesome equipment?

I too laugh at my own post.

We are a small team that specialize in manufacturing, but we do not have a programmer on our team. The company who provided us the equipment is of little help to us these days, especially when it has to do with the electronics of the equipment.

We don't know very much about PLC programming at all so we are looking for outside support for one maybe two Allen Bradley PLCs that need to be looked over, programming wise, and edited to better suit our needs.

If this is a one-off revision to the programming, you might reach out to your HVAC guy - heat, air conditioning - these contractors often have PLC guys on staff. They may be able to rent you one of their guys by the hour or the job. PS: I gave this thread some stars, that may get some more members involved.

Which Allen-Bradley PLC? PLC2, 3, 5, ControlLogix, MicroLogix, Compact Logix?

Why limit the search to the "DC/MD/VA region"? I have written many programs from offsite locations.

What remuneration are you offering?

CompactLogix L32E

We are not necessarily limiting the search. It is far more convenient for said programmer to see the equipment operate, how it should operate, and how we would want it to operate based on the programming.

The closest Yellow Pages phrases I could find were "Automation Systems & Equipment" and "Electric Equip & Supplies-Whsle & Mfrs". From there you might be able to find an A-B dealer who can help, or refer you to others who can.

There was a time when people came and went everywhere in this field. If you have an orphan system, good luck in finding someone to scope it out. I'm not familiar with A-B software, and thus cannot help directly.

Thank you for the tips on locating.

Yea, it seems far and few between finding a programmer in this field. Mobile phone app developers/programmers galore. A-B programmer...meh, not so much.

Have you contacted the VA state employment agency?

Monster has an area for employers too.

Also try searching for "Systems Integrator".

I echo Kilowatt0's post (#2) - but I'm not going to get into an auction.

Definitely going to look into reaching out to AB to see if we will benefit from a patch.

Thank you

Just put that patch over the jaundiced eye you are looking at your problem with for now. Make sure the programmer you hire has at least minimal knowledge of the type system he is working on what it is supposed to, and they understand that redundant sets of equipment cannot be just copy and past rungs in the ladders. Labels, registers have to be assigned correctly, or it simply will not work.

Agreed - a patch is unlikely to accomplish anything desirable here.

Rockwell distributors have exclusive contracts by geographical area. They usually have many local contacts for independent contractors who can help, and they usually get equipment sales as a result, so have an incentive to help you out. They also have a good idea about who is good on the type of equipment you have, which will help you get superior results for a reasonable cost. Especially the difference between continuous process and high speed motion automation, two very different fields.

Give me some more information and maybe I could help with out coming there. I am a retired Automation Specialist but have been considering doing some trouble shooting. If you have Face Book go to JEVCO for a Bio.

Do you have a documented copy of the code/ladder program, with comments and all the I/Os etc. identified? Working without can be very time-consuming (voice of experience, here).

Programmers fluent in RS5000 are very abundant. Here in this rural area, in a town of less than 10000 people, we have 3 companies with several programmers quite fluent in this, and several more programmers living close that work elsewhere. Most programmers I've met will consider moonlighting. We often hire these moonlighters for help here, as this company I work for has just one programmer and keep him busy. We get 2 projects at once, and we hire outside help, and so far, we've had 5 other programmers work for us. So they are out there. Place an ad. in the papers in your area. Someone should jump at this opportunity, because most programmers I've met also want to start their own business, and this would be a start for them to build on. Where you are, there has to be thousands of programmers capable of handling an AB CompatcLogix platform. Look locally, not on CR4 - they are out there. Advertise it and they will come.

Did the program ever work correctly? I was hired to correct software on a positioner for a pressbrake, and it turned out to be a hairline crack in an encoder wheel that the manufactures people couldn't detect. Similar to the origional "bug".
