Automatic Plant Watering System

10/18/2016 11:01 AM

I am making an automatic irrigation system that switches on when the soil gets too dry. This is my project for college. Could you please take the time to fill out the survey below:

Could you please take the time to tell us what you have learned in your research, what you propose, and how you will develop and test this before asking us to go to some silly survey site for all we know may be nothing more than a disguised advertising campaign at best and malware at worst.

In a word, it's lame.

It should be posted to gardening sites, not an engineering forum.

At least there are two proposed system schematics.

Sir Robin, in answer to your question about the internet, they called those " books ".

I remember those. I think all mine are still in the basement with maybe one or two are allowed in the bookshelves in the living room.

OK, I felt sorry for you and went back to the survey.

It's worse than I thought.

Here are my answers to your questions:

1. How much would you pay for this system? you ask how much someone would pay for an undefined system.

2. How big would you like the length of the product to be? Your units are whacky. FYI 150 mm= about 6 inches

3. Color? Really?

4. Which shape would you like the product to be? Which shape would you like? Hard to know since everything is undefined.

5. What material would you want the product to be made out of?

Acrylic

Other plastic

Metal

Wood

Other

Wouldn't the material heavily influence the cost?

My advice is to ask for much help from your instructor or change fields.

wow.. that is exceptional.

Does it have an adress where I can send money now?

Thanks for doing the heavy lifting Lyn. That little bit you shared was painful to read.

...to the OP. From what I've read. You are far from earning a passing grade.

Keep working on your project until it resembles something that took a little care and effort. Enjoy?

I'm toying with a number of different ideas myself, for my "patio-peppers" and other start-ups.

If you arrive at a design that simultaneously monitors/watches for the cats 'crouching' in preparation to "jump the wire enclosure" (to get at a visiting tree frog or lizard) and to ("warningly") SQUIRT them, I'll consider a token payment for the plans...

The automatic dry soil watering system has already been invented. Maybe you come up with an idea like : The automatic wet soil drying system, oh wait, that has already been invented too, never mind.

ROFLMAO. That must be a real problem in South Californica.

Here in West Texas, come spring, we turn on the timer system, set it up for one, or maybe two days a week, depending on how often we want to mow it, and turn it off if it ever rains, and then turn switch if off for most of the winter. Works OK, until something breaks.

I have heard of places near Dallas having issues during the recent droughts a couple years back where these giant gaping cracks in the soil opened up (in the clay black gumbo soil), and foundations were settling like mad. Systems had to be put into place to keep the clay "pumped up".

I'll stick with the low tech solution..

either that or something like this..

Ancnoble Gg-001b Irrigation Controller W/ Moisture Sensor And Solar

This controller controls irrigation based on real time moisture samples, which are the final results of all weather and plant water absorption conditions. Keeps the soil ...more »
