Where Have All The Cavaliers Gone?

11/09/2016 8:34 AM

We used to get very regular posts to this category from people saying, "My Cavalier has such-and-such a problem, what should I do?" I haven't moticed any of those posts in a long time. Is it possible that all the Cavaliers have finally died, been scrapped, and gone to that great automotive graveyard in the sky?

How would they get there if no one could start them up?

There are some questions one should not ask. If we get slammed with automotive questions (for the model which should not be named), I'm going to blame you!

No, Cavaliers started working all of a sudden and do not show any signs of malfunctioning anymore. They are driving everywhere and if you can not see them then this is because they are above speed limit - because they can!

Peter what are you dreaming of in the night? Take your pills and move on. There is no Cavaliers left that can cause a problem.

I was only looking for the entertainment value of the posts. I have no particular love or hate for Cavaliers. Maybe I should keep better watch when I am out on the roads...

The old one that my wife had got modified by my nephew as he was driving to work one morning. We had been thinking of selling it but thought we might have a hard time getting $500 for it. After my nephew modified it the insurance company paid us $2,000. We just shook our heads and cashed the check. The ways of the Cavalier are mysterious.

A mysterious person has been going around and snatching up all of the used cavaliers. According to undocumented sources, this individual may also be the same one that purchased all of the used Corvairs & Edsel's.

For the day, in the not too distant future, when these marques will be resurrected.

Those posts always confused me, in the UK the Cavalier is a very successful model by Vauxhall based on the German Opel design. As far as I know, it has no relationship with the Chevrolet model.

Yes, good link. I drove a couple of Cavaliers in the 80s as company cars. Good motors, no complaints.

Re: Where Have All The Cavaliers Gone?

I no longer own a Cavalier but my wife has a 2011 Chevy Aveo.

And We have an issue maybe you can help with.

We had to replace the ignition module and battery and front bearings in July

Since then the clock doesn't keep time and the day time running lights indicator never turns off. Even when she switches to head lights, no automatic switching of lights on this car.
Not really sure if the head light low beams work. Are the Day time lights and low beams the same thing. I thought the day time lights were a supposed to be a lower intensity than the low beams. They don't seem to change when she switches from day to low. High beams work fine.

We checked all fuses. I'm thinking about replacing the relay module for the lights. Not sure how to check if it works or not.

Any Help would be appreciated.

If your car has a Body Control Module, you might want to look in that direction. On many cars there is a data-electrical connection between the ignition module & BCM.

you might try pulling the off draw fuse for half a minute then reinserting it. worked on my T & C for an electric door lock problem. The BCM on it reprograms itself when you do this.

"Where Have All The Cavaliers Gone?"

Sounds like a title to a folk song from Peter, Paul and Mary or Joan Baez or the Mamas and the Papas

My mom used to have a Cavalier. It was sort of a charcoal grey. It would always start, but it could not out accelerate a jack rabbit. One time her and one of my sisters went to see an aunt up by Clovis, NM. There had been a big storm the night before, and mom forgot about that one dip before one went up the hill to aunt Mary's place. It was full of water, and they drove right in it! It did drown the poor little car, and when they got out to walk up the hill, water poured in about 2 feet deep.

That car always smelled like a 2 week old wet dish washing sponge after that. Yuck!

Where have all the cavaliers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the cavaliers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the cavaliers gone?
Young girls have picked them everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

The lyrics are not by Oliver Cromwell.

OK, it's a bad parody, but another thread seems (not read it) to suggest America may get some classics back from Cuba. Recent events may have changed that situation.

Re: Where Have All The Cavaliers Gone?

I once had a cavalier, and tried to sell it,couldn't sell it.Tried to give it away, couldn't give it away.

So I took it down in the boondocks.(Do I hear another song in the background?).

I parked it beside an outdoor toilet, and left the key in it.

A week later,I decided to check on it,and someone had stolen the outhouse, and left the Cavalier.

A recent check of the area revealed that the Cav had a tree growing up through the top, with limbs emerging from the broken windows and windshield.

It may eventually be in the top of a tree, like a Falcon I saw in a tree once.

Falcon

That is a good place for a Cavalier! Pity the falcon had to end up there.

True, true, 'tis a pity to see it.

The 60's Falcon and the 60's Chevy II were everything the Cavalier was not.

They were tough, reliable, economical, and simple to repair if needed.

I had a 62 Chevy II with 100,000 miles on it that was used on a mail carrier route:endless stop and go driving;hundreds of times per day,6 days a week.

During that time, it had no major failures, just routine maintenance;fluid changes, tune up,etc.

The old Powerglide transmission just kept on ticking, and the little straight six never gave up.

As a testament to the Powerglide,a modified version is still being used in competition rail cars on the drag strip.

The Falcon was equally as good.

It is a shame that Detroit lost focus on quality and began focusing on minimalist engineering and lowest-bid parts suppliers, and a goal of "build to last through the warranty period only."

That generation of quality was lost, and is never coming back.

It is no wonder that the imports are the leaders now in quality of engineering and workmanship.

It is not the fault of the American worker, many foreign cars are made in America, and excel in all areas.

It is the corporate structure and management that is at fault.

Agreed. It is a greed.

Greed, yes.

But equal parts stupidity and lack of foresight!

Now, that's a type of leverage.

The Army drove most of them into Iraq during the Gulf War. Backwards, so they'd blow up when they hit something.

What happens when you turn on the radio while backing-up in a Pinto? Country, or rock, your choice.
