New Machine for Sending Text Messages

11/16/2016 12:32 PM

Here's a great story for a Wednesday: a machine that sends text messages using vinegar and glass cleaner. Yes, I know vinegar can also be used as a glass cleaner; this machine must use the standard blue glass cleaner.

The inventor has also built a machine that sends text messages with vodka. Discuss quietly amongst yourselves.

Too late for the Ignoble prizes and too early for April First.

I guess it might be useful if you were being held prisoner and had a friend with a pH meter who worked in the sewer. It would be a relatively secure method of communications, I suppose.

At the Raccoons' Lodge meeting tonight, I'll ask my buddy Ed.

consider this... in 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes has the White House’s first telephone installed in the mansion s telegraph room. President Hayes embraced the new technology, though he rarely received phone calls. In fact, the Treasury Department possessed the only other direct phone line to the White House at that time. The White House phone number was “1.” Phone service throughout the country was in its infancy in 1877. It was not until a year later that the first telephone exchange was set up in Connecticut and it would be 50 more years until President Herbert Hoover had the first telephone line installed at the president’s desk in the Oval Office.

Thanks for education ... the idea of different collections of Morse Code
has answered my burning question (admittedly on the back burner) for
half a century. A long time Telegraph person Joe Williams passed away on
Monday this week and it is all sort of fitting!

The "sends text messages" bit is crap. Could just as well say "lights an LED lamp" or "keeps a heart beating at the correct rate" (tho' there'd have to be a bit of spare space in the body cavity). A lemon battery would be more compact and convenient.

It is well known that vodka(abuse) could sometimes help communication.

Me thinks the final 4 words of the video "summed-it-all-up", WHEN taken-in and studied in-conjunction WITH the statement regarding our "cells in our bodies already communicating using chemicals" {"together", mind you}.

After the fine folks at Stanford rack up YEARS (perhaps decades) of struggling to make "acid/base" technology as viable as Morse code (e.g., SE's blinker above) ... perhaps by THEN, some of them will gravitate towards the truth; that these marvelous vehicles into which we have been placed ARE, in fact, "fearfully and WONDERFULLY made"...(!)

What they might discover, in-the-process, is that with which Newton summed-up The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy (1846)/BookIII-General Scholium (final paragraph):

"And now we might add something concerning a certain most subtle Spirit which pervades and lies hid in all gross bodies; by the force and action of which Spirit the particles of bodies mutually attract one another at near distances, and cohere, if contiguous; and electric bodies operate to greater distances, as well repelling as attracting the neighboring corpuscles; and light is emitted, reflected, refracted, inflected, and heats bodies; and all sensation is excited, and the members of animal bodies move at the command of the will, namely, by the vibrations of this Spirit, mutually propagated along the solid filaments of the nerves, from the outward organs of sense to the brain, and from the brain into the muscles. But these are things that cannot be explained in few words, nor are we furnished with that sufficiency of experiments which is required to an accurate determination and demonstration of the laws by which this electric and elastic Spirit operates."

Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who sets the planets in motion.” ― Isaac Newton

Here's an article in Engineering 360 about this machine, complete with a picture.
