Is there a read-only feature that is engaged?

Find the pull-down menu that says "Properties" (of a file). There may be a check-box that says "Read only"; if so, uncheck it. (This is all just a guess on my part, so I don't know if it will fit your circumstances.)

You may also be editing a text cell that is used in the calculations. Calcs do not work on text.

hover over the source cells and see whether you get the little orage diamond with an exclaimation mark in it showing the cell is not a "number".

Just a guess.

What is the error shown? That sometimes is a hint as to the nature of the error.

EXEL on-line help has also been a good friend for things like this.
