Synchronizing Your Diesel Generator

12/06/2016 11:29 AM

What would be the cause if you had problem in parallelizing or synchronizing your diesel generator to the running generator and you experienced that the engine runs wild?

The problem is a failure to understand the need and the procedure for synchronising generators before attempting it. The solution is the correct level of appropriate training. Whoever is attempting it needs to find a mentor at the facility and complete that training before either:

* something gats damaged, or

* someone gets hurt/killed, or

* both the above possibilities.

This was covered several years ago. As I stated at the time, "If you do this improperly, bad 'tings gonna hoppen mon". Some one then posted a picture of a nuclear burst with the caption "this kinda bad 'ting".

Don't feel too bad, one of our "engineers" tried to parallel ships generators with the shore power. There was a large explosion ashore, followed by a cloud of thick black smoke. There was much weeping, gnashing of teeth and rending of flesh at the O club for weeks.

So many things could be wrong that match the vague description. If the speed, phase, and voltage are not equal, bad things will happen when you attempt to parallel. If the generator's been worked on and a couple of phases switched, the rotation could be wrong and this would raise havoc.

These are just a few things that could be wrong. Please have a qualified engineer look at it.

Would be beneficial to all if your problem is more precise. Running wild means, over speed / under speed not picking up load or falling out of syncro ....

The worst thing would be the alternator of the incoming machine will get burnt.

The running machine will get tripped and supply to the load will get affected.

The original poster asked about the cause, not the outcome.

I disagree, you have stated the most optimistic outcomes. This is what happens in real life:

The destruction can be instantaneous and massive depending upon the how far out of sync the machine is from the system.

Yes,short circuit forces.

Sorry my thinking has not reached this far.

AVR not working correctly

Engine Speed governor not working correctly

In-experienced operator not known what he's doing

Incorrectly connected

Lack of maintenance on the gen sets
