High Chromium Casting Defect

12/22/2016 4:04 AM

We were doing some research on High chromium casting and following defect observed in it.

The picture shows the section of the casting and it is actually the half section, the other half is exactly the mirror of the section. In other words the black acicular structure is formed only in the middle of the casting thickness. I don't what is this and why it happened?

The pouring material was High chromium white cast iron with Cr around 26%

Can anybody throw some light on it?

Could be a Kirkendall effect. I'd try to rule that out first.

Not that I can offer any help on this, but some information on the casting equipment and how you used it might be helpful (to other viewers). It looks like the center of the metal cooled off at a very slow rate to allow crystals to grow.... perhaps in a gas bubble
