Additional Survival Tool

01/05/2017 12:01 PM

May be old news, but I ran across this at the igNobel awards site.

Lost in the woods? Take your dog along as a compass.

http://frontiersinzoology.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1742-9994-10-80

It appears that dogs void facing north.

A dog's sense of smell is very acute. Maybe it has to do with the prevailing wind direction. (Unlike humans, however, dogs do not find the odor objectionable.)

Dogs like to find where "someone" else has left either a #1 or #2 deposit, and then circle around it two or three times, and zero in on it with the sphincter.

I don't know but, this is some sort of animal cruelty for me. Dog poop at least a day. It's a good thing if they pissed and avoids North. Dogs almost seem to piss a lot everywhere.

Besides, who would dare to watch close if cats also did the same as dogs? No offence to cat lovers, down here somewhere.

Me? I always square the negatives, that's all. Sometimes take the square root but it just won't work, not at all.

I am not bound to any people's expectation, you know. I got a life on my own. But, that person that owns me, is very passionate and I am ever grateful.

So the question struck a little close to home, yes? You can defuse it with humour if you like, but would it not be more beneficial to you to think about why you feel the need for such attention and address that instead? I can log off at any time or even leave this forum entirely, but you have live with you day in and day out. Seems to me addressing that need would be a worthwhile endeavour, but you have to respect yourself enough to want it.

Our dog has a rare earth magnet on her collar to operate an automatic dog door, so she spends a lot of her time geomagnetically confused. The end result is she heads for the family room hearth when it rains outside. Maybe we should put a magnetic stripe out the dog door.

Foxes appear to use the Earth's magnetic field whilst hunting prey that is not easily seen, such as a mouse under a thick cover of snow or prey hiding in thick vegetation. There are structures in foxes' eyes that may possibly aid in visually sensing the magnetic field as patches of light and dark.

Migratory birds sense magnetic fields and we've a lot of migratory birds around here.

I can only imagine what a bird might sense whilst sitting on a power line whose field is oscillating at 60 Hz, but such seem to be quite popular with our birds. Cheap Thrills? Not much else to do here, really.

What happens to the birds that migrate, such as the greater twisted toad egret from Scotland or the lesser feathered crested crimson sparrow that migrates to the USA every 2 years, and it is used to 50Hz frequency. Do they get muddled and befuddled sitting on 60Hz frequency lines?

I sure was as I needed to check the pH level after cutting, as it only grows in rare earth.

It's easier to teach your dog how to "find" home, and then just tell him "Home!". Trained a dog to do search and rescue, they always know where home is.

Very cool. My dog, wants to take off, but if I catch him before he shoots off down the sidewalk, he will spin around and come back into the driveway. Good boy that Billy!

My staffordshire pitt cross, pays no attention to the moss, wind, sun, or any other indicator...he prefers a short bush and works his way around it each day until it's full of hangers, then he starts another, using the same process for the next week, unless one of my liberal friends comes by, he'll drop one behind them to step in when he goes around front to lift his leg....

I reckon that's how they mark their magnetic domains.

Yeah, just don't try making a water witch out of those tootsie rolls.

I believe this whole thread makes almost as much sense as HCCC.

One good thing about a dog pointing North while doing his business, is that it allows his owner a chance to try their hand at scatomancy.

So what about the southern hemisphere? Do dogs brought up there face South?

What about dogs which are brought up in the northern hemisphere then emigrate to the southern, as the article claims that it's magnetic sensitivity, wouldn't they at least start "facing the wrong way", probably drawing the ridicule of the locals.

I didn't read the whole article incidentally, in case these questions are addressed.

Pity the poor beasts who are born at the equator.

How would they ever be able to go at all?

Come now you guys. They align with the red lines. Sheesh!

It's not at the equator they act weird, it's at the (geomagnetic) poles. At the north geomagnetic pole (NGMP) they stand on their heads and at the SGMP on their hind feet, except for this cute little fellow from Sydney who's visiting relatives in Canada and doesn't know his arse from a hole in the ground.

Looks like he is colder than the proverbial well digger's arse.

Pooping straight up sounds a lot unhygienic from where I stand (on my head, because break time is over).

I call it rubbish.

I saw this a few years ago and, ever since then, I watch my b***h each and every time!!

I don't think she has faced north once.

She tends to face me, wherever I am, all different points of the compass!!

It is interesting that dogs like to keep track of whom is watching while they tend to their business. Smart creatures that they are.
