Er, quantify the characteristics that the equipment is supposed to have, and then open a dialogue with (the) equipment supplier(s)?

I use the manufacturer’s tables along with either BS7671 or BS7430COP.

The manufacturers are the people I will jump up and down on if things go wrong.

It depends on the application.

There are plenty of guides available online like this very helpful one below covering low voltage applications for residential and industrial protection.

Again, refer back to the link to the handbook in post #5, its really good.

That is how I taught myself lightning protection when I used to sell the stuff. High rise building lightning design is in there also (or at least it was in the older 2nd addition, I haven't read through the 3rd linked).

Sounds like perhaps the lightning grid earthing (which needs to be separated both electrically and physically distant from other wiring) is not separated enough from the buildings existing internal phase wiring/data wiring AND earth wiring and earth grid.

If it is too close the lightning strike can induce currents in nearby wiring and metalwork as it flows to the lightning ground point and cause voltage disturbance issues even if the lightning earth passes mechanical and electrical tests!

Ditto what jack of all trades said. An excellent resource by the looks of it.

Surge (sometimes styled as SURGE) is a citrus flavored soft drink developed by the New Products team at Coca Cola Atlanta in 1997.

I guess it all comes down to your willpower constitution.

What are you trying to protect? Computers, TV, power lines, transformers, home incoming line, wife?

The individual that invents something to protect from surges from <...wife...> will make a fortune...

Well I am hoping it is as I need to test my wife surge gubbins prototype out again after modifying it slightly.

I recall a similar post a few month back on surge arrestors and it went in a similar way as this one may go.

So that's the list. How about some parameters and dimensions in columns to the right of the list?

If a column is laying down is it classed as a barrier or a banister on earth?
