Studies Showing EMF Radiation From PLC Smartmeters

02/11/2017 3:58 PM

I am looking for studies showing the level of EMF radiation from narrowband PLC (power line carrier) smart meter systems such as PUDs have, in particular, those using Aclara modules in the meters.

Surely, there is some data out there concerning this. Does anyone know of any?

Thanks

Google would know.

You might worry more about EMFR from all powerlines first.

ancer and EMF: EMR )Electromagnetic Radiation), Powerlines and ...

This may help.

Is that really a concern about the EMF radiation from narrowband PLC (power line carrier) rather than the EMFR from all powerlines first?

That is correct--only that which is caused by narrowband PLC communication, frequencies substantially higher than 60 Hz.

Thanks for the question to help clarify the info I'm looking for. I was told that the modules communicate by putting a binary signal at 0 to + or - 22 degrees from the zero switching point on the AC waveform. The transmitted power involved depends upon how far from the zero crossing point the binary signal is placed, I understand. See the youtube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2D9DEltOZM&t=77s where some of the waveforms were more than 22 degrees from the zero switching point.

Yes, it amazing what a simple Google search can discover. The modules transmit in the 450-470MHz spectrum at approximately 229mW (milliwatts) to DCU (Data Collection Units) located typically 25 ft. above street level, not via PLC. They transmit 4 times a day for 70ms (milliseconds) for a total of approximately 1.7 MINUTES per YEAR.

Compare that to your WiFi router or cell phone usage. Which do you think exposes your brain to more accumulated RF energy exposure???

You are asking somebody to do arithmetic.
