Pipe Rack Query

02/15/2017 9:21 AM

I am a draughting student and need to design a pump house (including pipe racks) that abstracts water from a river. I only need two pipes and was wondering if I should use a strutted or unstrutted design. The pump house is 150 meters from the river.

Thanks.

What would be your choice and why.

Depends on the strength required.

I'm rather a fan of strutting. Distributed load and all that.

You'll need to do some analysis to make an informed decision.

Size of pipes?

Distance into river for intake? Hose?

Depth of river?

sand? Mud? Rock?

span between pilings?

the same color as the pipe would be my guess.

There again I am about to pass out from all the online excitement today.

There is the oduer of both present as I write this. If the wind is out of the east today, it is probably from the large local feedlot (cattle) operation east of Lubbock.

Some say it is the color oduer of money, but I doubt that. At least not in here.

It is difficult to give any advice when zero cogent information is given.

If you can't define the pump house and its function in words, you will never succeed as a designer.

At this point you are heading for a D- grade.

Nearly every person who comes to this forum with a question, you have to kick in the teeth. WTF, Lyn!?

Lyn, just like me - if you have a question, make sure you give enough information so that an answer can be formulated and given intelligently. It's the same as a computer, garbage in garage out and, if you don't have enough information given to start with, there will be no answer.

"garbage in garage out"

Please tell me more about that!, I could use another garage...

And to Shelley: Welcome to CR4!. If it is to abstract water, then everything is theoretical. I presume you meant extract...

Re: Pipe Rack Query

No, Shelley wants to abstract water. Heck I guess land is doled out by title abstract, even by patent. Who knew you could get a patent on land (at least in the Commonwealth of Virginia).

I suppose an abstract of water is similar to a land abstract in that it lays out the details of where, what the boundaries are, how much, and for what purpose the resource is being acquired.

I also want to know more about this garbage in and garage out phenomenon.

I would rather have garbage in, and hot De Lorean out. but that is just me.

Depends on if you are running the pipes above ground or beneath, weight of the pipe, size and strength, what your budget is, and many other factors....In any case the pipe should be properly supported according to code....

By abstracting water, do you mean real or imaginary water?

There are two distinct color codes for that.

If you are merely drawing water from the river, you could use crayons.

It appears to be like some engineers communicate in an overtly abstract way. Not entirely clear what is taking place, LOL.

I knew what the writer meant, I just thought the sentence was a bit obtuse in the way it was presented. (Grammar Nazi over and out.)

'strutted or unstrutted design' What is this type of design? Never heard of it. Maybe clarification on this or is this a colloquial term.

That is where the engineer completes the design, and either paces about the office in a non-strutting way, or is overtly strutting about the office while abstracting about his water abstraction.

OH. If "green" energy, then paint it all in "evergreen", and be done with it.

I thought the whole idea of painting anything green means it runs on zero energy costs. I must be correct as weeds, grass, bushes and trees all grow by themselves for free.

abstraction of water is a term for taking water from the environment.

Thank you. I was not aware of that use of the word (definition #5 in my electronic dictionary).

Re: Pipe Rack Query

Hi all and thanks for all the input. As I said before, I am a draughting student, so I'm not studying engineering or design. The river intake is in a protected "winged" area and the pipe racks are spaced at 6000mm apart. I believe for the amount of water needed, I only need to use 60mm pipes. The pipes carry the water to my pump house, which has a first floor water treatement room (3000x3000x3000) and a 15000lt reservoir sits above it (as per my brief). The water then supplies five hypothetical bush bungalows.... (game viewing park). Anyway, thanks for all suggestions and tips. Back to the drawing board...
