You or Somebody Else Has Done This Operation Too Many Times

03/01/2017 11:59 PM

Why do I get this message when trying to post a reply now?

If you post more than an <unspecified> number of times within an <unspecified> period of time, it locks you out for around 8 hours (even though it says 24). This has happened to quite a few members (including myself), but especially when you're new and tend to post often. You can ask the mods increase the threshold. They're pretty good about this.

Back to this threshold: I have serious doubts as to its usefulness. I've heard that it is supposed to be some sort of spam countermeasure, but as spammers can post a lot of spam before exceeding the threshold, it doesn't strike me as being particularly effective. Determined spammers, moreover, having reached the limit, can simply create additional sock-puppet accounts and continue spamming, ad nauseum. So much for its being a countermeasure, ay?

Really, the people it punishes most are legitimate (albeit 'chatty') members.

It's a software glitch, you just need to refresh your cookies....

Why do you say it's a 'glitch' when the mods can adjust the threshold? A glitch is a defect or a malfunction. This is a designed-in feature, else it wouldn't be adjustable.

It's a glitch because it doesn't stop spamming and it blocks users....Why would you block users that are not violating the rules? So it's not stopping spam and it's preventing legitimate posters from posting, it's a glitch...

Glitches are unexpected, whereas this, as flawed as it may be, was designed to happen. This behaviour is intentional, not an accident, malfunction, or a bug. This is what distinguishes it from a glitch.

Long time sine I had that issue, but flushing cookies etc did not help.

Few times in the past, CR4 has been hit by multiple new members wo use those ID's to flood and crash the site. CR4 seem to have that sorted. It's possible that the offenders had the same IP address, and a posting limit could track and block them.

Whatever the case, CR4 are simply playing safe with new members. The one-off spammers are usually noticed and dealt with pretty quick.

In my experience Admin are very good at helping members who encounter a problem.

"In my experience Admin are very good at helping members who encounter a problem."

I and many others here disagree.

Many of us here have complained about the validity and practicality in application AP function for years yet nothing is done to get rid of it.

As of lately a person is more apt to have their post rewritten for no reason than any of us are to see an unjustified, rude or just pointless AP post have a damn thing done about it.

Seems Pretty strange to some of us to see that grammar and spelling no one cares about gets something done to it regularly and without justification yet the very thing everyone hates is totally ignored because there is a one in a million chance someone may need to use it for its legitimate purpose.

I'd like to respond, but I'm not sure which group of people you speak for. If you would share the member group I may do so. (that is to say, 'tongue in cheek, fair enough comment')

For a side-splitting laugh, use the CR4 spell-checker. It's especially funny for Brit-American. The lesser know Grammaticator function is even more hilarious.

That's been my experience also. Very helpful. I pm'd one of the mods about it, she bumped-up the threshold, easy-peasy, and further suggested I contact her again if it was still a problem.

A workaround for the glitch? Nonchalantly starts preening..

In well over 4000 posts, over about 10 years, I've never encountered this problem. ...but then I'm not a full-time CR4 user. I still work some of the time! I doubt if I've ever made more than 10 posts in one day.

Mea Culpa!

Actually 4200 posts in 10 years turns out to be an average of just over one post a day. But of course there are many days when I don't manage to find the time, so it's probably closer to 2 posts per active day...
