Partial Discharge Test Device

Does anyone have/use a partial discharge test device?

What kind of problems can you detect except for dust and dirt?

Openly I think it unnecessary.

Your thinking is openly incorrect. PD is known to occur in equipment that has flaws in the insulation system. It can occur in cables which have been damaged during installation or have an ageing phenomena known as treeing, also in improperly or poorly made up terminations. Transformers exhibit PD when the insulation has partially broken down and is therefore in danger of failing completely as the energy from the PD further degrades the insulation, or there is a poorly made up termination. The list can be extended to any type of equipment subject to high voltage stressing.

1. Non-cable screw had loose, It was tightened.

2. Voltage Transformer had dusty, It was cleaned.

Partial discharge test are usually done at the initial stage of the installation and of course, if you like, you can use the partial discharge equipment to test your installation if you detected there is an abnormal sound coming from the equipment.

Basically by general checking, the partial discharge will produce a hissing sound or cracking sound and proper inspection is needed to find out where the sound come from and what cause it happen. See some sample of partial discharge.

Additional to the post, the white sport is the partial discharge cause by bad insulation.

PD tests are the fastest way to find any design that is wrong, or similarly, wrong implementation of the design by the manufacturer.

Just last week, while testing some transformers, we found that the isolation was damaged when getting bad results with this test. And since it gets the isolation burned, the area can be clearly identified.
