Oroville is a busy place. two pics from the main spillway. the second pic shows a shotcreting operation. this is a Bandaid so they can make use of the spill for Spring runoff.

Remember Austin, Pa. - hope they stop this dam before it gets away from control. The one in the pic also had warnings ahead of time and attempted repairs to no avail.

Very different situation; perhaps not relevant at all.

I've been to this site near Johnstown, PA. A very sobering museum regarding that needless tragedy. I am a bit surprised there has been no mention of this (at least that I am aware of).

It was mentioned (irrelevantly) in the "Oroville Flood" thread, one of several threads on this same topic.

Well....this is about 125 miles from Johnstown. This site is in the middle of Potter county, which sits on the NY state border. This occurred about 30 years later.

This isn't Johnstown - see my reply to Reid.

According to Wiki, the problem both times in Austin, PA was failure of the dam. In Oroville, (fortunately) the dam itself is currently not thought to be in danger of failure. All the problems have been in, or due to, defects in the two spillways.

I'd hardly call dynamiting part of the dam an attempted repair, but rather a desperate attempt to minimize subsequent damage.

Busy ?

Don't look that Busy.

Looks like there might be about a dozen workers in the pictures.

Then again, there are only 5 people actually working.

Just like CALTRANS.

1 Guy holding a shovel, 5 guys telling him how to use it !

Huh? Please identify the worker with the shovel, and the alleged supervisors.

There is one worker on the scaffold spraying concrete, the guy next to him with his arms on the rail, is obviously his immediate supervisor. On the top picture there are 5 or 6 guys on the spillway above them, they must be managers because they aren't in the work zone. I see no shovel.

1, worker

1, supervisor

6, managers

0, shovels

Sounds about right.....

I can't get images to upload this morning...

The first picture in This article from the SF Chronicle shows a lot more activity from farther away... The totally muddy water tells me this picture must have been taken before they got the hydro plant up to full speed.

It is incredible how much soil was carried away. In nature, this would have added a new layer of soil to much of the northern and central Sacramento Valley and the Delta. Now that dikes prevent the water from spreading out, I presume much, if not most, of that soil ended up making the SF Bay shallower, or was carried out to sea.

Have you heard about an interesting side effect of the disaster of the Oroville dam.

California's new gold rush!

"Floodwaters are receding in the Feather River and gold fever is hitting Oroville after weeks of raging waters have stirred up mineral deposits in the river bed. Now prospectors are looking to strike it rich. "

My guess would be air-arc gouging for fit-up of the pipe end to whatever joins to it.

Either a bevel cut or squaring up the pipe end.

It was obvious that this was going to occur, but I didn't anticipate their lowering of the flow so rapidly, so it's happening sooner than I expected. Obviously, first come, fist find...
