Impulse Withstand Voltage of LV Product

What is the importance of Impulse withstand voltage and how to decide on how much kV is required? For eg, For an ACB we say that product Impulse Withstand Voltage is 12kV.

Depends on the standard being used e.g IEC61439-1 and IEC61180 being 2 related to LV switchgear. No doubt IEC60947 will help with regard to LV ACBs.

Impulse withstand voltage is used to test the Insulation levels of an electrical equipment to withstand the lighting strike pluses and voltage or switching surge in the power supply line. There are two basic classifications of insulation strength that is the Basic Insulation Level (BIL) or lightning-impulse withstand voltage, and power-frequency withstand voltage (often called “hipot” voltage).

The Impulse voltage testing systems are designed to generate an impulse voltages that simulate lightning strokes and switching surges. The complete test system consists of a charging rectifier, impulse stages according to the "Marx Circuit", an impulse voltage divider and impulse voltage measurement system.

The basic insulation level or BIL of an electrical equipment determines the principle dielectric qualities of the apparatus and is expressed for impulse tested apparatus by peak value of the 1/50 microsecond full wave withstand voltage.

The withstand voltage will be refer to IEC Standard and for an ACB of 12kV the impulse voltage will be 95kV.
