It appears to be a picture, possibly .jpg of something unknown to me.

It is a photograph of the first nuclear weapons test at the Trinity site prior to the end of WWII, but made through a very optically dense material, clearly showing the bubble of hot gases that results early on, perhaps this was merely one frame in an entire filming of the event.

I think you are right, I remember seeing that pic now. G.A.

Here is one close to it.

It's interesting you can see the tower and guy cables outside of the blast but the part within the fireball likely no longer exists.

Soon to follow (many frames later), as that is a nasty fast explosion, and a high speed camera.

That is "just" a luminescent mushroom, I forget the variety. It does not appetizing to me in the least, nor does the initially posted image.

Christmas Island tests and others

Castle Bravo

In spite of the seriously deadly aspects, there ascribes a certain beauty in these above ground tests. A beauty the eye may not directly behold, just as peering at Medusa would turn one to stone. It is my solemn prayer we never, ever must use a weapon such as Castle Bravo, but it will be wise for enemies of the United States of America to consider their actions, and what it will mean for them, should they ever decide to use such a weapon on any scale, at any time, at any place on earth or in space.

Fredski, no that the B-52 with the tall tail was retired to the Boneyard and scrapped long ago. It could be a B-52A, B-52B, B-52C, B-52D, B-52E, or B-52F variant. I'm not even considering the XB-52 and YB-52 Prototypes, as they were not utilized in live nuclear weapons testing as far as I know.

Even the short-tailed B-52G, and a good amount of the B-52H models, have been parked in the Boneyard. A good majority of those have already been scrapped (pursuant to the START I and II Treaties) or cannibalized for parts. Naturally, some have been de-militarized and used as Gate Guardians or are in museums. I have some nice photos of a B-52G Gate Guardian located at the western gate of the now defunct Griffiss AFB in Rome NY, home of the 416th Bombardment Wing. I also have pics of an ALCM sitting next to the BUFF as well.

The only active BUFFS in the USAF inventory are B-52H models, sans their multi-barrel 20mm M-61 Vulcan tail guns.

I thought you were a cement guy! give me fractional credit here, the 52 was an amazing and durable platform for decades

the cannibalizing era on our air force ended Jan 20th of this year ( a shameful period in our once proud aviation history.

I enjoyed a few things about this story. back in the late 40's and early 50's the original high speed celluloid footage was about as good as money could buy. the filmmakers of that era had no idea the tech they were using would one day be supplanted by digital files , scanners and computers. now instead of rotting away in a vault somewhere their work will be preserved longer after the celluloid has deteriorated and is lost. plus we get super slo-mo and shots like my pic that began this thread

cool stuff if you asked me

Mighty mite, the atomic cartoon character. He just sits around and waits for someone to make him blow up.
