Did Local Weather Give Your Nose Its Shape?

03/17/2017 11:57 AM

I have no doubt that this discussion will devolve into some Friday silliness, but I'm posting the link anyway. Keep it reasonably polite, folks, and enjoy!

Is that why we Scot-Irish have little short noses, because all the ones with longer noses had them frozen off in winter?

Did I get it wrong? Nah, it is the study that is wrong, as long pointy noses will definitely fall off in cold weather. The bridge of the nose can be prominent, and long to help heat up inspiration (love that word), but if the tip of the nose is long and pointy, that could lead to frostbite in the winter, and since many have chosen mates by their appearance, a blackened nose just still clinging on would be a mate repellent.

Thus the shorter little stub of a nose on a long bridge is the winner.

In the humid tropics, I can see where one might want a larger condenser to allow the nasal mists to fall away.

The bigger the nose, the more it is poked in other folks business. Guys grow moustache's to highlight their noses, they underline them to be noticed.

Scots and Irish were actually given small noses as they got first choice.

And lips were only provided to stop ones mouth fraying around the edges.

Absolutely nothing of scientific value in any of this study.

I have an athletic nose. It is always running.

Will it devolve? The shadow nose.

The nose is a unique adornment for the face. The nose is given little attention unless it's absent. (Can't get that image out of my mind.. no nostrils either)

Awww - at least you can admire the polar bear while they devour you (collective you, nothing personal).

Did you see the newborn polar bear cub born in captivity on the news the other day? Very cute.

Squirrel, Squirrel.

Polar bears have to be able to smell their prey through thick ice, and know where to break the snow pack for a meal.

I think the shape of my nose, was made by getting it broken too many times, playing backyard football as a kid. It somehow manages to meander back and forth like a river.

You sure it isn't the size of your fingers as a little kid. Kind of work it so you get just right.

Believe it or not, here is a technical paper on the subject...

"Investigating the case of human nose shape and climate adaptation"

My nostrils are a bit large, but I like to have a good dig. Bit like relaxing in a warm and soapy bathtub .

The weather did not give me my present nose shape.

However for my brother getting kicked in the head by a horse when he was 7 - 8 gave him his. (likely also responsible for other odd neurological and personality attributes too.)
