Air Levitation Skis

04/08/2017 4:14 PM

Are there any good research papers or established theories on using skis with either porous air bearings or an air skirt with holes to send pressurized air out? One of my concerns right now is the stability of a ski (ie any particular shape each ski/section should be and whether we should divide each ski up into sections) and most optimal way of funneling air out from a compressed source to the atmosphere. Essentially these skis will support a hovercraft-like contraption that is supposed to run over a metal track with less than 1mm height variation at the gaps at speeds of 100+ mph.

I've already come across industrial grade air bearing systems similar to a hockey puck table but it doesn't seem like they like to work over gaps, but more importantly I can't find subject material on whether they can still be effective at high speeds?

What would be the application? thrill ride? Maybe sturdy nylon cups on a wet polished stainless steel track...Is this strictly downhill, gravity driven?

This is a level system that travel under its own propulsion. The goal here is to minimize the power needed to maintain a set velocity.

Well where would you run a vehicle at 100 mph except on a track or over the water?...and if you're going to run it that fast over a distance, it will require a smooth flat surface, not an easy accomplishment just on it's own, forget how much it would cost...

Can it work on extended passage over land, such as open range? Yeah, I know, those barbed wire fences are a real pain. What about in the everglades? Go? or NO go?
