Would You Ever Put Your Hair on Fire?

04/15/2017 1:51 PM

I mean would you like the barber to lit your hair on fire? I don't know, but it's quite a fire hazard to me. What benefit would it give to the scalp, hair and its follicles?

You can tell this isn't in the US, no way they could do this, the liability insurance would be astronomical...What if something happened to the barber after ignition....say he was distracted

Excuse me can you tell me where the owner is?

Extremely dangerous practice and stupid as hell. Burn considerations aside, have you ever smelt burning hair? Can you imagine walking in there and smelling that?

I'm thinking the barber flunked out of chef school, but always wanted to make one of those flaming dishes.

Yes I have had my hair burned off before. Pretty much everywhere on me as well (front half of me anyway).

Above average (near freakish) healing abilities helps a lot on the recovery side!

You're supposed to step back from the tires after you light them.

I recall in chemistry lab in school bending over the lab notes and feeling the hot gasses from the bunsen burner on my face. I didn't think anything more about it until later when I noticed my eyebrows were singed off.

Largely the same effects I have lost most of my hair from over the years.

Most common events were simple blowbacks/flashbacks from a cutting torch or plasma cutter or large burner while cutting or heating something.

Contrary to what many think, an open flame is not required to take hair off. Just a hot blast of high temperature vapors is enough to do it.

If God meant us to have eyebrows, he never would have invented gasoline.

I think Lyn has been catfished..

On topic I don't find the technique unusual. It's been around loooooong before the scissors and far more humane than waxing!

sadistic at best

I remember this technique from some barbers (from the old country) back in the 1940s. They used a taper of waxwed paper to light the hair and no gasoline (used in this video). It was much more controlled burning and served the purpose of closing the folicle ends after cutting; or so I was told. It was an add on cost to the client, so I never had it done.

During the Korean War I was assigned to a camp in Japan. The Japanese barbers, after giving us the standard heinie ha

ircut, would use a thin burning stick and singe the ends of the hair as it stood straight up from your head. It made sense at the time that they were closing off the hollow hair?????

Anyhow, it certainly smelled as you might expect!

It is supposed to seal the cut ends of the hairs and this is quite common practice in many countries and, has been going on for decades. Perfectly normal and acceptable practice for many people.

That's how they die when they want to cross over in between solar panel reflectors on the farm. There's no triple xxx factor crossing there, I guess. I just hope there are no parachuter daredevils wanted to try that one.

Hope they don't allow other barbers to use hair spray while this procedure is going on.

Gutmonarch I saw a guy "shaving" with a Bic lighter in the men's room at a local restaurant/ bar. At the time I just thought he was down on his luck - maybe he was ahead of his time or from Pakistan.

Follow-up Question:

What type of hydrocarbon or organic compound can he possibly be used just to give it a mild or temperate flame? I bet, buddy James knew this one.

Has anyone posting here ever smelled burnt hair or skin? Myself and many others think it is one of the most disgusting smells in the world! I think mother nature may have did it that way to try to tell us it is not a good idea. This idea is not a good one and probably someones idea for a few seconds of internet fame.

I don't see the benefit, scientific or otherwise compared to cutting. To me this just looks like a marketing fad or similar that got out of control.

The last person that tried (and succeeded) in setting my (leg) hair on fire nearly got himself punched out (it was at school many years ago, not like a business conference that went horribly wrong).

Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

Anyone notice that A) he light's the customer's head on fire (twice) at the START of the haircut, B) After the fire treatment he's going at the guy's head with 'multi-shears,' and C) The guy's hair doesn't look that much shorter than when he came in.

Burning to close the ends? maybe, but there's no point; hair is not like a braid, it's not going to come apart completely if the end isn't 'sealed.' and besides, he takes the scissors to it after the burning, so he's just cutting off the 'sealed ends.'
