AgCI Contact With SS316L

05/31/2017 12:54 AM

Hello, may I know....

Would AgCI coating on a component diminished (detreated) if come to contact with stainless steel 316L?

Many thanks in advance

Does it come in contact with 316 stainless in the light of day?

Thank you for response! Do you mean under the sun light, the answer is "NO" but it exposed under a fluorescent lamp or light.

Does your evidence of 'detreatment' include a darkening of the surface?

Yes, it has turned darker.

And what about the 316l? Have you noticed a change in that surface as well?

I suspect there may be a reaction with one of the oxides on the surface of the stainless, or one of those oxides is acting as a catalyst.

Silver halides are the photosensitive materials in chemical image photography. They are routinely manufactured in equipment with stainless steel wetted surfaces. However, exposure to light reduces the compound to metallic silver, causing a darkening of the surface as indicated above. As these materials are routinely manufactured in safe-light or no-light conditions, this characteristic is rarely evident.

From my knowledge 316L stainless is a chemical resistant grade of stainless steel, and should not react to the AgCI coated component when there is contact hence chemical reaction.

Your compound is written AgCI. This is made up of one silver (Ag) atom, one carbon (C) atom and one iodine (I) atom which doesn't make sense.

Do you mean AgCl, silver chloride?

Many stainless steels are susceptible to corrosion by chloride.

This may be of help.

There is a difference between chlorides as ions in solution and chlorides as solid compounds. AgCl is largely insoluble in water.
