Macular Degeneration Of Eye

06/17/2017 11:09 AM

This is old age problem but unfortunately there is no treatment for this. My wife has taken 3 injections in each eye of Avistan but no effect. I have searched web but I could not find any treatment. If any of our Sr. members have faced such problem, I would be thankful if they can help me.

There really isn't much in the way of treatments available for this condition...mostly these are to slow down the progress of the disease, rather than improving or correcting the eyesight...in any case treatment takes time to work and requires a patient approach....It's easy to go crazy throwing money at health problems, I just accept I'm getting old and these problems come with having survived so long...in other words I feel fortunate to just still be alive...

Could somebody check my pulse just to confirm....

Yes we're good....

Yes you are right these are old age penalties. We have to beart with them in spite

of having limited income. Regarding your pulse I suggest go to nice looking nurse who will give you right reading..

There are two forms of macular degeneration, dry and wet.

The dry form means the macular cells are dying. No cure currently available. The doctor can do nothing. It does not affect peripheral vision, which is coarser, so lacks the fine detail of the macular area. The patient will be purblind, unable to read or enjoy films without suitable magnifying equipment, but will still be able to recognise people by their outline and coarse detail. My affected mother would say to me "you need a haircut" and she was right. To slow down the progress of the condition, eat sensibility, maintain a sensible weight and attitude, and exercise. All is not totally lost.

The wet form means that new blood vessels are over-growing the macular area. This can be overcome by injections into the eyeball every 6 weeks or so. They reduce vessel growth and prevent new growth. Surgery by laser is also possible.

Check that the correct diagnosis has been made, as to the form of degeneration.

Hi,

It is unlawful for me to give medical advice, so I will advise you to read up on Omega-3 fatty acids, Blueberry extract, Astaxanthin, Vitamins A & D, Lycopene, Lutein, and Zeaxanthin, as well as Arginine, Taurine, and Tyrosine.

The good news is that it is not unlawful for you to give medical advice, unless you are pretending to be a doctor. The even better news, since I am medically qualified, is that I agree with almost all you say. I would be more specific and point to articles on dry and wet macular degeneration from the Mayo Clinic for US readers, and to the equivalent for UK readers from NHS Choices

Note that the emphasis is on slowing the progress of both diseases, with little prospect of reversal.

Thanks all my friends for your advices. I am not here to sue anyone for free advice, it is just to know if you had any such problem and how you faced it

The important thing about changes in life is the human ability to adapt. I will in time be in a similar position to your wife.

I have been lucky in having a good education, health, good friends, a great wife and children. I was a reader, an occasional writer (of technical articles mainly), and I have always been curious. Now I realise that I should not only keep fit, but keep up with friends, to talk with them, listen, and help if/where possible.

I still have reasonable hearing. Ask a blind person and they will tell you the worst thing they can imagine is to be deaf, and so be cut off from humanity. I will enjoy asking friends about things I know little about, but where they have had experience. They will paint pictures for me.

My wife will be my eyes and my driver, when needed. When she no longer drives, I must learn to use public transport again, memorise timetables, and as much as possible still maintain a form of independence. I will still be able to write, either by dictating to a person or to a computer with Dragon software. As Frost wrote "miles to go before I sleep".

Adapt, maintain the circle of friends, keep on learning.

I've heard about Lutein, Fish Oil and Omega-3 fatty acids being on most people's lists.

Possibly read a little on zinc also. Some doctors are now confident that some groups of MD patients have a slight statistical benefit from zinc while other groups of MD patients seem to be slightly harmed by zinc. They have found a genetic marker to allow people to know their zinc group. Double check with a doctor that you trust but it is worth looking into.

Once again, this is only presented by them as a slight statistical benefit in slowing down the progression of the disease. Not a cure, not a miracle, but every little percentage point is worth looking into.

In other words, arctic fish (or antarctic krill oil), blueberries, plant phytosterols, carrots, and sunshine (or Vitamin D milk), tomatoes, blueberries, and beets.

Caution: the supplements provide the required amounts more readily than the whole foods.
