Invisible Fence Break Detector

06/30/2017 9:21 AM

I want to find a break detector for our invisible fence wire that costs less than the $90 version Mr. Best in Show found. The last two times the fence broke, we knew exactly where the break was, and he repaired them easily. Last week we had to have a tree taken down, and the tree people broke the fence wire, we knew not where. Mr. BiS called the invisible fence company to fix it -- for $200!

I'm confident that there's some non-expensive tool that can detect a break in what is essentially an antenna, not an electrified cable. Any suggestions?

Take and strap that collar on and start at the far end and work back along the wire run when you get close to the brake it will let you know.

Strap it on Ozzb first, those things hurt!

He does have a useful idea though.

If you are talking about "electric fence", then one way is to have strategic "earthed" points along the run. When you move the earthed wire close enough, you hear the "snap" as the voltage jumps the gap. Our farm had over 60 km of fence, so we had these at each paddock corner and gateway. You might also find a local that can explain how to use a blade of grass. (Fresh grass, but not wet) as a high resistance sensor. Touch it onto the fence and you will sense the "tingle" as opposed to the ZAP!.

As far as I am aware, its not a High Voltage "fence"....

If Invisible Fence breaks and wires would be visible then you could use visual aids to see where the break is. Costs your time but no extra money.

A tree down and tree people around the spot where the tree came down one would assume thats where the break is?

Weird system that needs to locate a break in the system and would usually break with the system but cannot indicate where it broke.

I'd ask the invisible fence break system people to explain how this works.
