Underwater Transducer Instrumentation

08/23/2007 3:29 AM

I am thinking about carrying out a small scale underwater experiment (short distances) involving two small omnidirectional transducers, one for transmitting and one for receiving. The frequency range that will be used is 1000-5000 Hz. I need one transducer for signal generation and one for reception.I am not sure about the instrumentation required to make the transmitter and receiver work. I guess i need a preamplifier (hydrophone) and a poweramplifier (transducer). Is it possible to use matlab for signal generation and recording? I hope someone can help me.

Hi,

Coincidentally, I have worked on a similar project in the past but it was not completed. You could contact me on fountainbase@aol.com and let see where I can be of help.

hello .

I guess you can, and for that frequencies , you can use matlab tools to process the signal, that can be recorded as a sound signal (or tranformed into one)

for live tracking , I guess that it depends on the matlab series

can you keep me informed of the development?

Use hydrophone with ultrasound frequencies. Device may cost about $1000 for professional communication and you can try amateur link also for reduced cost within $100 by doing it yourself.

Yes you can use matlab for signal generation and data analysis.
If you have any dataacquisition card you can acquire the signal from receiver through preamplifier.

I think following sequence will work for your experiment.
1. Generate signal using matlab or signal generator.
2. Amplify the above signal ( Make sure the power handling capacity of the projector and depends on the distance you use between projector and receiver)
3.you have to consider the distance between projector and receiver because you are using low frequency.
3.Use hydrophone for reception
4. Feed the hydrophone output to the preamplifier and send to the dataacquition card for data storage and analysis.
