Label MEP

07/31/2017 4:16 PM

How would you guys go around to label the MEP in a building ?

I was told to label all the water, electrical, HVAC and all that is possible in the building.

How should I approach this ?!

I would walk up, and ask: "Hey, you there, are you a MEP?" If you don't get smacked down, it probably is a MEP.

I'm just an EE, but I suspect there is an architectural drawing with MEP numbers on it.

At least two of us have no idea what a MEP is...

Correctly labeling everything in even a small plant can take months, but when the unexpected happens, those labels help a LOT!

Undefined TLAs: <...MEP...> and <...LOT...>.

That's NBG. Try www.acronymfinder.com, perhaps?

ROFLMAO at all this acro-speak...in a building, if it walks like a MEP and quacks like a MEP, it is a MEP. If it moves, put an ID badge on it; if it stays in one place, label the pipe, conduit, or sewer pipe.

IF the label chooses to stick around 10 years from now when you need to fix a problem!

I meant to off-topic myself but hit send a tad too soon. Some of the other posts aren't exactly on-topic either!

Get a blue print (if you have any) and start recording what needs to be labeled. Talk to the Departments involved (Maintenance and Electrical) and start identifying and labeling, after which talk walk around to verify and see if you missed anything.

Remember, on the water, you also need to know which direction the flow is.

I'd start by going back and asking in what detail. For instance, do you want potable water lines marked distinctly from cooling water lines and do you want to identify shutoff valve number? In some places I've seen lines marked "Electrical" while in others the markings also identify breaker panel number, circuit ID and voltage. Is there by any chance a contract or specification drawing that specifies the marking requirements?

You should be looking for the oldest guy in the plant, or the one who is retiring soonest, and ask him for his help. Hint: never rely on anonymous strangers on the web to do your job for you.
