Because people like to tinker and/or discuss what they're interested in - a foundation of this very forum, and, arguably any forum in existence.

Please don't reply to threads with a single word.

I thought that my one word question was legitimate, as I saw no useful purpose in such a contraption and no reason to go to the time and expense of constructing a device whose function was intuitively obvious.

I suppose the OP's answer says it all.

It may be obvious to you, but we have younger and/or less experienced users who can see something like this and can be intrigued to learn more about electricity and why spinning magnets next to such a device can light the LED. Not everyone on the Internet are experienced experts in every field.

Whether or not a thread or the concept/idea behind a thread is worth staying here is the mod/admin team's job. If something is here, it's here for discussion. If anyone is not interested in the concept, then don't post.

The usefulness of things and the discussion thereof is not being discouraged. That is obviously an important part of engineering and discussion. But a one word reply of "Why?", especially as the first post, discourages commenting and is not the type of culture we want to introduce to new users.

Actually, it's great that someone is doing something other than mindlessly spinning the thing.

The next step is hooking up a battery and transistor circuit to the coil like in the pendulum desk toys to give it a kick every time the magnet goes by to see how fast it can be spun up.

look how the slinky started out...

"Mechanical engineer Richard James invented the Slinky by accident. In 1943, he was working to devise springs that could keep sensitive ship equipment steady at sea. After accidentally knocking some samples off a shelf, he watched in amazement as they gracefully “walked” down instead of falling."

Just because one can't find a use for it today, one has to keep an open mind, if for anything, a future use, even if its just for entertainment. No one knows where that will lead to.

Engineers would make the best designers of teaching aids. Include a media presentation of the fundamental physical principles being demonstrated by the different Fidget configurations.

What a great little demo toy!

What really intriqued me is how little work, as demonstrated by the low deceleration of the rotor, was being spent in lighting the LED.

Box them up with a some type media that covers electromagnetic induction, rotational energy, and conservation of energy.

Cool - very cool!

Re: Fidget Spinner Mini Generator

My boy picked up a spinner at Menards that's lighted and WiFied. So we listened to Uncle rush on a spinner until the battery crapped. He asked if it could generate it's own power. I speculated that some lighting might be generatable.. ? However generation of power for the WiFi AND sound would be like adding a brake.

..when I asked "why" he was getting it. His answer was typical. Because it's $4.99 and I want to see if it actually works.

... I've made little science demo's for school kids.. they would love this.

There's plenty of "why"..

Thanks again for kick starting the conversation Lyn.

Wait! You mean a magnet moving near a coil of wire can generate an electrical current!?

What? That's wild. Who knew this!?

/oh... everyone... Nevermind

You think there are a lot of grade schoolers here at CR4?

My sarcasm wasn't about the video per se, but at the way it was presented here. As if folks here at CR4 are so clueless they don't know how a generator works.

"You think there are a lot of grade schoolers here at CR4?"

Personal maturity wise, yes.

Intelligence wise, occasionally a few wander through here now and then.

Age wise, none.

I'm not going to say it adds a little flavor to the mundane.. good and bad..

Oh. I just did.

"Personal maturity wise, yes."

And thank you for being a perfect example of that!

Love it. An electro-barmagnet mounted on the figet in series with a solar panel mounted on the top. Use a P-channel - N-channel polarity flip-flop where the base is controlled by an accelerometer. Set it out on a sunlit level surface and observe it's rotational acceleration.

Re: Fidget Spinner Mini Generator

It is just a small educational project and we hope kids will be interested about how it works' I am 100 % sure about all Cr4 members know how it works .1

..........

In the first project presented on Cr4 forum (which containes a message - I gave all the clues - someome will figure out ......) - many thought I was looking for fame (I.m just st behind an IP adress who decide to share something more important than a small generator created in educational purpose )

thx st
