Dog-Walking Drone

08/17/2017 10:55 AM

This strikes me as the kind of thing that you shouldn't do even if it's theoretically possible. I think my dogs would try to catch and kill the thing.

What's the point of even having a dog if you aren't going to care for it?

Just hang a picture of your favorite breed on the wall.

You could then have a "dog of the month" collection of dog pictures for variety.

Great answer, Lyn!

We recently adopted a "free" dog from a rescue couple here in Lubbock, and she was pregnant. Unfortunately, due to the previous owner not feeding her properly, she was backbone and ribs, and a big belly. X-rays showed that the litter was dead inside her.

I was so angry, I cannot mention here what my thoughts were.

We took her to a second veterinarian after the first one stated he was not set up for that surgery. Second vet was steamed at both the previous owner (of course), and also the first vet for not immediately performing an emergency Uterus removal, due to condition known as "plugged uterus", where the dead litter is rotten in there and produces swelling until the thing ruptures, killing the mother dog.

Dr. Clary here saved that little dog's life, and we love him forever for doing so.

She is now a $2000 (after all was totaled up) "free" dog. Fortunately, she is so sweet, I feel she is worth that much to see her now, prancing, dancing, and happy.

I have grown to be very partial to the little Chihuahua-rat terrier mix breed, they call them Rat-Cha breed. Not sure if that is proper AKC nomenclature.

This is not her, but looks similar.

That is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. If you are too lazy to walk you own dog, get a cat.

What if you had a smaller dog? Would Fido be flying?

I can picture stupid owners trying to lift their dogs with it, doing nothing more then choking it.

If you can afford 2k on a dog walking drone, surely you can afford to pay the neighbor kid to walk your dog for you.

One of my two cats will actually go for a walk on a harness and leash, no problem. The other will not, but will play fetch with aluminum foil balls. She will bring it back and drop it at your feet until you throw it again.

I saw something on Science Channel about a cat flying suspended from a drone.

I suspect that borders on animal dronery.

As small as my dogs are, they would eat the drone, or die trying.

Good grief Charlie Brown! That is the apex of lazy (and stupid). The dog wants YOU to walk them (interaction).

Assuming (and we all know how that word breaks down) the article is correct:

"which have built-in retractable leash, hands-free piloting and runs at an "auto altitude" (we're guessing that means high enough to avoid a dog attack)."

That still assumes (there's that word again) that the dog won't be afraid of the blasted thing, or strong enough to drag it out of the sky.

I can assure you that my 73 pound American English Coonhound, and 65 pound German Shepard would beat that thing to death chasing a rabbit. And when they were done they would drown it in the river, while getting a drink and cooling off.

Why would something like this need to fly, or even think flying would be advantageous.

Being on the ground might allow for a fighting chance of not being pulled around wherever the dog wants to go.

And a similar topic... at least phrase.... the movie Ghost dog had a good general theme, but turned out to be one bad movie, all because they had cast an old, limpy, over weight, lazy eyed, has been actor Forrest Whitaker, as a samurai master.

He played it as though he needed a 'Rascal' just to get around. (I wonder if it has 'tip assist')

I've seen people teach the dog to hold the end of the leash in its mouth. I don't think that meets the requirements of the leash law and this doesn't either.

OK, I get it, dogging on and on.

All that theory seems to work until Microsoft decides to upgrade the software in mid-flight, or it shuts down because the battery monitor malfunctions out in the sun, or whatever other of a thousand reasons to go "toes up."

I so do see humans winning the battle against sentient AI beings. We just dial up Microsoft, and you know the rest of the story.

Re: Dog-walking Drone

Even more absurdly, it's patented. I've got an article not yet posted online for "Some Things You Didn't Know You Needed - From the IoT." It begins with this. An excerpt:

We lead off with US Patent 9,661,827 to SZ DJI Technology Co.1 for “Systems and Methods for Walking Pets.” Fig. 1 is reproduced nearby. Yes, that’s right… it is a pet walking drone. This is a great invention that clearly satisfies an unmet need. We all get too much exercise, and need things that enable a more sedentary lifestyle.

And who wants to deal with what goes with pet walking when the drone can do it? The patent specification discloses that the UAV (drone) includes a waste removal unit that “can include a mechanism configured to extend from the UAV to remove the waste, for example a mechanical arm,” and then “recognize a disposable container and dispose of the waste.” It occurs to us that between the removal and disposal steps, the drone is in a sense, weaponized. But there was no mention as to whether the mechanical arm has a fling mode.

I'll post a link when the whole article is up. There are so many smart products being developed out there that you didn't know you needed.

I find that there seems to be a relationship that as the number of 'Smart Products' on the market increased, there is an inverse affect on the intelligence and health of the consumer buying these smart products.

My dogs would agree with you, as would I. Every time I fire up the string trimmer with "Bitsy" in the back yard (and the others join in), she attacks the thing with all the fury of a wolverine, though she is 3/4 Beagle, 1/4 Pug. Gotta love a dog with a face like that.

If Granny had that, she would not need a lift chair, either! She might need a trip to the emergency room, however.
