Arduino IDE Compile Error Oddity

08/18/2017 11:52 AM

In a Windows 10 OS, using version 1.8.2, supposedly using the updated libraries, I had been having fits over a simple load cell sketch with LCD 20x4 display, and a data logger shield with real time clock (RTC). All of the problems results in cryptic error messages for the file verify step before uploading, all revolving around Library files, and all were while using a marginal memory HP laptop (blue one).

I finally decided the laptop had had it, and moved on to my desktop in my home office, and the mods to the file compiled flawlessly in the first go! Next I tried my older laptop, a Gateway (grey/black), will loads of memory available (780 GB??), and it worked flawlessly as well.

Obviously my questions follow:

(1) what is up with (blue) HP laptop, given failure to verify files, and frequent error messages about memory usage on a 32 GB system (supposedly with 1 TB on the cloud, but I have been extremely shy about using the cloud, and not really sure how to use it anyway.)

(2) I have found only up to about 1 GB worth of my files, including emails, pictures, MS Office files, and Arduino Libraries and sketches. So is Microsoft playing with my noggin by backing up constantly to C:/ volume and taking up all the disk? Or what?

I have probably purchased my last anything from HP.

Have you tried the compress files utility?

Why no, Solar Eagle, I have not tried zipping up files. I will look into that, but what about the double and triple versions of Microsoft stuff just sitting around?

You seem to be calling hard drive space "memory". I can't imagine today's computers having 780GB of RAM!

Does the laptop have 32GB of RAM, or is that the size of the hard drive?

Data storage, memory, what's the difference?

The question I posed was answered by the link, the difference between data storage and memory...I guess you didn't bother to read the link...

I am a humble bird/man....while at times during a debate I may seem sharp, it is in the spirit of gaining insight through representation of both sides in an argument/discussion to arrive at some measure of truth and enlightenment ...It is only when one stands in the middle can he see both sides equally....

Oops. No, I was talking about the hard drive, not the RAM. the blue one (HP) only has 32GB (about like a mediocre thumb drive). It is not a disk drive really, either.

I think it is called SSD.

The grey/black Gateway probably does have 32 GB RAM and about 780 GB or so disk space.

Thanks guys for responding. I can always depend on this crew for fast answers.

That's about what I thought. How long has it been since you updated the Blue HP? The SSD driver may need updating.

Good luck on the project.

I learned from another source that is laptop is meant to be more of a "lab book", but as far as updates go, it seems to be updating from Microsoft all the time. Usually right in the middle of me trying to do something "important".

I learned that on this model, the SSD drive (storage disk), is hard wired to the motherboard and cannot be replaced. I plant to end this, migrate all personal files to a real laptop, and not this kid's toy, then shut it down and walk away in disgust.

I suspect that the problem is RAM rather than SSD.

To find out how much you've got go to:

Control panel

.......Systems and security

............System

between 2 and 8 GB is fairly normal.

To find out how much of your SSD is used go to

Windows explorer

..........C drive

...............Right click

......................properties

No, it is hard disk space I keep getting messages about, rather annoyingly.

Last time I buy such a cheap POS.
