Can Hydraulic Tubing J524 Be Used for Mechanical Linkage?

09/01/2017 9:39 PM

I have a production project, making windshield wiper linkage for Jeep CJs. I would like to know if J524 spec tubing, .375 o.d., with .083 wall thickness is strong enough to resist bending in a push-pull operation. Tubing would be threaded for 1/4-20 eyebolts, maximum length of tube is 22.5 inches. Resistance is 2 12" wiper blades on flat glass windshield, worst case would be dry glass. I am interested in this particular tubing because 4130 tubing is eating up my saw blades.

J524 spec tubing,

You could use it to tow the Jeep in a pinch.

Tensile Strength Min310 MPa
Yield Strength Min310 MPa
Elongation Min35%
Hardness Min65 HRB

That pretty well takes care of that concern. In reading about J524, flaring kept coming up, but I can't recall ever hearing about flaring an .083 wall tubing. Thank you for the affirmative answer, chuckling as I close.

"SAE J524 cold drawn and annealed seamless low-carbon steel pressure tubing intended for use as hydraulic lines and in other applications requiring tubing of a quality suitable for flaring and bending."

Both responses are from:

Could you buy more expensive saw blades?

I ordered a stainless blade for my Rage Evolution, supposed to be here Monday. I'll post on how that works out. That would be my best solution, considering the amount of 4130 I have on hand. The J524 is a back plan. Last resort, at this time, is to bundle tightly and go to a friends shop and use his bandsaw, not convenient, 50 miles from me.

Checking it for buckling I get buckling load 496lbf, assuming tube ends fixed in position (at right angles to the tube) but not fixed in direction, so effective length in Euler's formula = actual length.

It's usual to allow a safety factor, something like 3, that still gives 165lbf, which I would guess is more than enough.

The wiper pivot pins are at right angles to the rod ends. The tube and rod ends are in a straight line, no offsets. It might take molasses in the winter time to reach 165lbf. Thank you for the response.

No problem! That's right, the pivot pins allow the ends to move in direction in the plane of the rod, the linkages prevent movement in a plane at right angles to the rod. Mathcad calcs below if you're interested.

Way back, in another life, high school, algebra 1 gave me nightmares. It all looks interesting and I thank you for the calculations. I am not going to look too long, headaches will occur. I will go with your information.

Thanks, I didn't have time to look for that yesterday.

To OP: Buy a chop saw. You won't regret it. Even a cheap one will cut bundles of small tubing.

I have a chop saw, my concern is air hardening, the tubing has to be tapped after it is cut.

Your Parameter "Worst case would be a dry Screen"!

I would have thought worst case would be a windscreen full of wet snow. The load on the mechanism would be a lot more trying to move a mass of wet snow than the friction of a flexible blade moving over a dry screen.

I don't know which part of the world you are in, but worst case would be blades frozen to the screen?

I am in the southern US, but my retailers will be selling nationally/internationally, so encountered weather conditions will be from on extreme to the other.

I was assuming the Jeep was going to be driven so screen would have been cleared of ice, wet snow falling while drivining.

Located southern Germany.

Do you know how much actual, maxium torque can be generated by a 12V wiper motor?

wexco d101 wiper motor,j3 series,12v,32nm torque

Monster Guts Premium 2-Speed 12VDC Wiper Motors are super-strong with plenty ... Rated torque: 53 in-lb; Stall torque: 177 in-lb; Unload high speed: 50rpmspeed.......35rpm, 1.0A (12VDC); Maximumwattage: 50W/12VDC; Motor noise: < ... **Please Note: We highly suggest using the Monster Guts 12v5a Power Supply.

Worst case would be wipers frozen to windshield (winter) and stalled.

What about corrosion resistance? I would expect the chromium content in 4130 to help with that. Are you coating or plating the finished product?

Material selection is about more than just strength. In this application rust is very likely on untreated steel.

Yes, I am way behind in my reading.
