LibreOffice - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download ...

Apache OpenOffice - Free download and software reviews - CNET ...

I use notepad sometimes as it comes free of charge and is a pretty good clone of Word.

Apache OpenOffice is my go to source, since I refuse to buy Windows crap.

I tried LibreOffice and thought it was slow.

I'm running 8.1 on this machine and my other laptop runs Vista.

I deleted W 10 upgrade offers as soon as they were made available. Having Microsoft know my passwords, banking information, credit card access information and everything I said and wrote was too much for me.

The good thing about W10 is the ease of hacking your information....so the hackers tend to ignore us dummies still on XP and Vista! (not always but manageable)

The wife's machine downloaded W10 in the middle of the night, without her permission.

It took her weeks to get it in order enough to be useful, but she didn't have the IT guy revert it back to W7, so now whenever it feels like it it shuts her down and loads more useless updates.

In a similar vein, one possible additional layer of (insulation) against hacking is to pay monthly expenses &/or all other costs with a credit card that has a hard upper limit of only $300 to $500...

That practice should discourage hackers who are looking to make big-ticket single purchases, until they get desperate(er?)...

I still prefer 7 over 8.1, but that is just my opinion.

Agreed. It was a greed for Microsoft to come out with Windoze 10.

You don't own W 10, you rent it, as you will all MS software starting with W 365.

This is just the same as your pusher giving you heroin for the first week to get you hooked. Once you take the plunge, you're committed to keep paying.

This all stated with Adobe.

Software as a Monthly Rental - The New York Times "But now, Photoshop is also the biggest-name software that you can’t actually buy. You can only rent it, for a month or a year at a time. If you ever stop paying, you keep your files but lose the ability to edit them."

Steppenwolf said it best!

"God damn, the pusher
God damn, I say the pusher
I said God damn, God damn the pusher man"

Great minds travel in similar circles, and unfortunately even dummies like me, can think like you do at times.

I thought about cleaning my brain, but then I would be brain-washed.

I so hate Windows 10, I almost threw out my rear main bearing!
