Hybrid Car

If you are going electric look into high frequency motors and lithium ion batteries. I love these projects.

Dear A A,

You might check out www.randolph-automotive.com (look at the engine links where I gathered some info) and also www.hybridcars.com

And you may contact me, for I have some pdf to share with you. Phone number is on the website

Hybrid cars

02/01/2006 3:41 AM

Hi there. As far as I can ascertain the hybrid principle seems to use established technology for the prime movers (internal combustion engine / motor). The problem seems to be that the manufacturers have developed proprietary control and electronics systems which are normally classified as 'trade secrets' for want of a better term. In the first instance the brochures in the car showrooms would seem to represent a good starting point because they invariably contain a precis of the tv adverts and may give a 3d cutaway illustration of the infrastructure. Hope this helps! Car manufacturers are notoriously tight-lipped about their new toys!

Boostcap®Ultra-capacitors

02/01/2006 6:14 AM

Battery's ?????? You need dynamic power to drive a car, that means high currents to accelerate, and high currents back when u use regenerative breaking. Use Boostcap® Ultra-Capacitor's, les maintenance (+/- 10 year life time) Very interesting site's for information about hybrid cars : www.nrel.gov/vehiclesandfuels/energystorage/ www.ctts.nrel.gov/analysis/ Hybrid kart, Hydrogen fuelcell and Boostcap® Ultra-Capacitor for racing with zero emission : www.formulazero.nl/ Hybrid busses : www.isecorp.com/ Boostcap® Ultra-Capacitor : www.Maxwell.com/ And you can contact me, I have a lot more information about al type of hybrid vehicles. Hybrid vehicle overview

02/01/2006 10:02 AM

There has been an enormous amount of work done on hybrid vehicles. A quick search on google scholar for hybrid vehicles yields over 38,000 results.

The biggest challenges in hybrid vehicle technology today are cost and battery capacity. Cost is an issue because there are two separate drive mechanisms in the vehicle. Battery capacity is an issue because higher capacity batteries (or ultracapacitors, which have a much higher power density, but lower energy density) allow close to "ideal" hybrid operation. To summarize briefly:

The goal of a hybrid system is to run the gas engine at constant power, as close to its optimum efficiency point as possible. The actual steady-state power required from the I.C. engine is generally much smaller than the peak power requirement. For example, when I worked on a hybrid transit bus project, it turned out that the average power required for traction over the standard bus driving cycle (as defined by the federal gov't) was 14 horsepower. Hotel loads (A/C, lighting, etc) required another 20~30 hp, for a total average requirement of less than 50 hp. However, to meet acceleration requirements, the bus had a 250 hp diesel engine. The idea of a hybrid vehicle is to supply those acceleration peaks from the battery, and to recapture kinetic energy and recharge the battery during braking. The I.C. engine can then be sized to handle the steady state load, and can be run near optimal efficiency at all times.

The issue with ultracapacitors is that their low energy density precludes storing enough energy to supply long acceleration peaks. Generally some combination of ultracaps and batteries provides the best overall tradeoff between power density and energy density.

Steve,

This is a very interesting overview. As a mechanical engerineering undergrad student, I am very interested in future technologies such as hybrid cars. Any good sites that you could recommend that have current events about hybrids and alternative fuels?

Thanks,

Chris

my own thesis

02/01/2006 10:23 AM

I wrote a thesis on the basics of hybrid technology and some specifics on the engineering challenges related to their drive systems. I'd be happy to send you a copy if you'd like. It lists all my sources as well.

electric car

03/03/2006 8:29 PM

My 12 year old built a electric car using a 24 volt motor and a Ford Pinto. Removed the fuel tank. Floored that area and placed 12 batteries there and under the rear seat. It is wired to produced 48 volts. the 24 volt motor replced the engine which he fabricated a plate to attach to the auto transmission. He can run about 60 mph for 2 hour straight. He mounted very narrow tires and this low profile seems to lower his need for power to displace the air and fight friction. He also cut out a lot of the body weight with fiberglass. Fender wells were simple not replaced at all. What would happen in an accident I can not say since saftey was not his motivation. He has a charging system that engages when going down hill so the system is not drained when pulling uphill. Not bad for a 12 year old with only marginal help from ol dad.
