Realistic electric car plans

11/15/2007 10:48 AM

Where can I get some plans for a personal electric car that is realistic to build? I would like to take on this project next year.

From Auto Journals?

Billion $$ companies' designs versus yours---. You will have to decide these:

Range Km you expect to Go & Return on one "filling"

Max Capacity(persons/Goods) you would offer

Price/"Fuel "consumption you would offer.

Rest-your sweat!

Hello sailingromantic ,

You can find lots of stuff on the net , just google down parts required , design the car , look for the load carrying capacity , range of battery in miles / km , max speed ,weather to use hub motors or common huge motor with transmission , controller , type of battery (energy density, cost , charging time ,reliablity , weight), you can visit sites like www.teslamors.com , for any clues

Electric golf carts will run up to about ten miles. How far did you have in mind?

My colleague is putting the finishing touches on a personal Toyota MR2 using military lead-acid batteries. Search the web. There are conversion kits you can buy for all sorts of cars with a minimum of machining.

My friend had to have a plate made to mate the electric motor to the transaxle of the MR2, but the rest is off-the-shelf components from searching the internet.

Expect to spend $10-$15K for a donor car and all the electrics, batteries, etc. You might be able to do it cheaper if you search.

Start by researching fork-lifts or you'll do your back in.

Do you plan to start from complete scratch?

I would have thought you would need to do some conversions first to get the hang of how some things are done, a bit like learning the basics.

In the same way that an engine engineer never starts by rebuilding a formula 1 engine before he plods about with an old moped from his uncle or something.

Try to gauge where you are with that before jumping only to find the other shore is a bit further than you thought.

If you already done that than hats of and all the best of luck, would love to hear from you again with some result.
