Science, Technology and Engineering ... let's discuss

12/07/2007 1:10 PM

This writer has been observing that there are various discussions in the different forums, especially in the General category, wherein members and "guests" initiate discussion topics, some of which seem to be bordering on unscientific and unverifiable ideas. This has prompted the writer to initiate the current discussion topic ... Let us debate on what constitute:

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY and ENGINEERING

What we understand about each field? How do we say that something is Scientific? What is Technology? What differentiates Technology from Engineering?

This is how I usually break it down in my mind (in very broad, general terms):

Science is the search for fundamental knowledge with a very low importance placed on practical applications - pure research.

Technology is standardization of devices or methods based on fundamental principles.

Engineering is combining fundamental technologies in new ways to improve quality of life.

Example:

Science discovered microwaves.

Technology led to the microwave emitter.

Engineers built the microwave oven.

Very simple and certainly not applicable to all situations, but serves as a broad base to start from.

I see a little different relationship between the three. Engineering uses discoveries in Science to produce Technology.

Hello pvhramani,

The three are inter-dependent.

Scientists use Technology

Engineers use Technology

Technologists develop better Science

Engineers use that better Science

And so it goes.........

For each of the above, an understanding of a wide area of knowledge is needed.

Kind Regard.....

Accumulation from the internet ( The world book)

To claim something is SCIENTIFIC it should be undeniable. For example: To state simply, deniability means that it should be possible to set up an experiment that can possibly refute the scientific claim. For example, taking Newton's example, it should be possible to set up and experiment that can possibly prove that action and reaction are not always equal. One such simple 'experiment' would be putting your pen on the tabletop. If action-reaction were not equal-opposite, the pen would fall through the table. But is does not happen.

Technology on the other hand, is a product of engineering and science, the study of the natural world. Where science has two parts: (1) a body of knowledge that has been accumulated over time and (2) a process-scientific inquiry-that generates knowledge about the natural world. Engineering, too, consists of a body of knowledge-in this case knowledge of the design and creation of human-made products-and a process for solving problems. Science aims to understand the "why" and "how" of nature, engineering seeks to shape the natural world to meet human needs and wants. Engineering, therefore, could be called "design under constraint," with science-the laws of nature-being one of a number of limiting factors engineers must take into account. Other constraints include cost, reliability, safety, environmental impact, ease of use, available human and material resources, manufacturability, government regulations, laws, and even politics. In short, technology necessarily involves science and engineering.
