I just did this in my house. Go to www.dlink.com and read through their how-tos. Basically you buy a wireless router that connects to your DSL modem - using the ethernet cable you already have. The router has wireless connection, but also wired connectors. I connected one PC using the wired connector and an ethernet cable, then put a wireless access point card in our other PC. That's about it - just follow the instructions on the disk that comes with your router. There will also be s/w there that will allow you to share printers and files between your PCs. You can buy USB plug in wireless access points for your laptops. Dlink is just one manufacturer, but buy all your stuff from the same manufacturer for easiest installation. Make sure everything you buy is compatible - using exactly the same wireless standard.

Good luck!

What you need is a wireless router.

At home I have installed one of them.

2 Desktops and 2 wireless laptops.

Mi router is a BELKIN Wireless G Router , you can use a linksys as well or other.

You connect the ADSL wire to the WAN input of the router and use the LAN ports for desktop wired PCs.

First install it with the installer cd

after You can configure with the browser acceesing http://192.168.2.2/

there you can give access to the mac address o wireless mac address that you wish

For have wireless access you need to configure the laptops to find the wireless network first.

That's it

These are the devices/items you need to buy:

  1. Wireless Router
  2. Desktop Wireless Card.
  3. Ethernet Cable ("cross-over" not "straight")

You may do the set-up in any order you feel comfortable with.

Configure the Router by following Instructions on how to set-up as per Router's Manual. Install the Wireless Card into you Desktop and configure it using disc that accompanied the card. Connect the Wireless Router to the DSL Modem using the "cross-over" Ethernet Cable.

Assign static IP's to each computer based on the Router's IP set-up. You may also set-up the Router to automatically assign IP's by its DHCP. Make sure that your Router's set-up is "secured" and by providing a "network key" for the 3 computers to be able to connect to the Wireless Router.

Your Internet Connection will be shared by the Desktop and the 2 laptops through the Wireless Router. You may set-up your Desktop Computer as a "file server" so that files can be accessed by the 2 laptops through your Wireless Router that ties up your 3 computers into a WLAN.

Hope this helps.

Hopefully all this other advice is all you need. I have set up several of these and it was a breeze getting them all to connect to the internet. Getting them to see each other varied between, "I don't see what the fuss is all about" to about 200 hours of hair pulling and screaming at a stupid little box. Including changing one of my PC's to a linux box, learning linux, turning my linux box into a domain controller, buying another new router and finally upgrading the other PC's to Vista from XP. (The only thing that worked.) I can now print from any PC and share files.

I gave my extra router to my computer newbie brother-in-law with some basic instructions and he had his set up in minutes. Easy as Pie. His home network: *free*. My home network: $485.

By the way, you do not need to make your desktop a server to do what you need if you buy a router instead of just a switch. The router can handle all that stuff. If you are a tweaker, some of the routers have 3rd party firmware that you can download that allows you to do some pretty tricky things like boost power to your wireless antenna for extended range. (2 to 3 times the range)

Hi Jojie,

The best you could do, is to contact your wireless router manufacturer technical support. I have the same system as your's with LINKSYS router, and set it up with the help of tech. support with no problem.

Good luck,

Javid
