This is a very difficult question to answer with no information. What kind of PLC, what exactly do you want to know about steps? Do you know anything about ladder logic programming? Are you familiar with relay logic? What are you using to program the PLC? If you don't know anything about ladder logic programming in general I would reccommend finding someone to do your programming for you. If you are just wanting to learn, I would suggest purchasing a book on it.

Hello eng-hmk,

Welcome to the forum.

We hope you will contribute to and learn from the forum.

I have few suggestions for your future queries/questions..

a) Please give as much details as you can give about your problem.

b) Keep the forum posted about status of your problem/query.

c) Ask specific questions..and you will get specific answers..( general question will get a general answer..)

Ok,..now for your question.

1) You should the control logic/process flow of the system where you are intending to use your PLC very clearly.

2) You should calculate the number of digtal inputs/outputs you will require.

3) Number of Analog input/outputs if any, should be known.

4) Decide the make of the PLC based on your liking and local support you have in your city.

5) Decide the base and I/O expansion modules based on the number of I/O you have calculated. ( Always keep at least 3 I/O's spare).

6) Now based on the process flow and control logic start writing your program.

7) Upload to PLC and simulate.

8) Run it on the system.

Good luck.

For any control system project in industry:

  1. The User Requirements. Compile a short piece, say no more than 500 words, about what the system is intended to achieve from the User's point of view.
  2. The Control Philosophy. Compile a longer document from the Process Engineer's point of view about how the system is supposed to work: what sequence steps are necessary to achieve the desired results; what alarm actions are required at various steps in the sequence. A "bingo chart" is a useful thing: Step 1 - valve 3 open - valve 4 closed - pump 9 on - step ends after 20 minutes, though on high pressure at PS2 alarm and go to step 0 (only do it graphically on a box-matrix-type thing; it looks a bit like a Bingo game card, hence the name).
  3. The Functional Design Specification.
  4. On agreement of all the above, hand the agreed documents to the programmer for coding to begin.

I do agree with chaterpillar's set of needed items for good project start.

As I could understand you're novice in PLC-based developing. Therefore it's thought you're going to hire a programmer. There is next crucial problem how you'll be communicate.

I could be advice you to study Finite State Machine theory concepts. It's quite good bridge between "bird language" of programmers and end-consumer.

Good luck at everything whatever you plan.
