The Dominican Republic has acknowledged that in a chicken farm , dead chickens were identified as carriers of the Asiatic bird flu initially H5N1 from which a Pakistani not in direct contact with birds, got infected and died. Since then the flu migrated in the Middle East, Europe, Africa and now in the Dominican Republic. The Haitian Government has imposed an embargo on all chicken and eggs coming from the Dominican Republic. To cover a border of 393 km they have added 7, yes 7 sanitary officers only. They seam to think that the disease will not cross the border between the 2 countries sharing the same island by taking control of the border. The virus has now mutated to H5N2 and we are in winter where migrating birds go south from Canada and the USA. This disease is transmitted to domestic birds by migrating birds, such as ducks, for example, that will return north during summer time( with the H5N2 Virus!
Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the same island of Hispaniola. Haiti does not produce eggs in industrial quantities and import its needs from the DR. , Eggs are an essential part of the Haitian diet (boiled with hot sauce and a slice of bread) that' s all till noon. Furthermore the virus is sterilized at 60 degrees Celsius and eggs are boiled at 100 Degree C. for 5 minutes.same for chicken. this flu is not transmitted to humans but may mutate into a transmissible disease to human. But cooked represent no danger to human.
Based on those facts stopping the import off eggs and chicken from the DR. is a theatrical show of politician concerns or paranoia.Well publicized show to justify their legitimacy. Meanwhile 8.000.000 Haitians will have to see their quasi inexistent buying power shrink more...once more, being forced to pay more for American imported eggs. The law of supply and demand will invariably prevail. What comes do my mind is : that the people at those times are so miserable that they are fair game for opportunists posing as politicians.
