Unsubscribe but want to be informed of reply

02/18/2008 9:12 AM

I tried looking if this question was asked before but looking through all the search results is time consuming.

Is it possible to unsubscribe from a thread but still be informed if a reply was made to my post?

In some threads, I find that it has either gone far off the topic and shows no sign of returning that I want to unsubscribe. However, I would still want to know if someone posts a reply to a post I made. It would seem terribly impolite if I don't respond.

Hi Vulc'
I used to be informed by E-mail...but not now, that way you still see 'updated discussions' when I return to CR4 (that's about every 10mins). It saves your E-mail getting flooded, but keeps you in touch.

I think that's as close as you'll get to the ideal of only being informed if someone replies to your specific posts.

I know what you mean...I unsubscribe once I find myself thinking...'I don't really want to look at that....'

Maybe, if we all asked nicely, one of the CR4 guys could fix it for us? Probably a bit tricky to do for individual threads, tho.

It will be very difficult to seperate high value answers from the dross once the thread has gone into orbit.

Just unsubscribe and check back now and again but you need to still filter through all the rubbish to find out if there is anything of interest to you. No other way I think.

I find this happens too often and I am getting fed up with it. It may even be the reason I will switch of all together soon. I already find myself spending less and less time here as there are just too many halfwitted guests and newbies rocking the boat. Most are not interested in good, high value answers which is proven by there absence once the thread has been answered.

I don't even care anymore if I am identified for my flaming answer, here it's done, it's all out in the open.

Maybe you are right and it was supposed to be funny but I think that if you don't have a sense of humour, you can't feel your way around to find it. In other words don't try to be funny if you're not sure if it is funny. Only be funny when it is, that way you know that when it is misinterpreted, it is their problem not yours.

Yes I now see it is a "bad day" but in general I still feel the same way, if you don't want to contribute, piss off somewhere else.

I have read these replies with surprise and I have to concede that knowing you guys do appreciate other contributors, it is a nicer place to hang around.

case491,

I guess I just voiced out something that's been botherinig you. Don't let it get to you. I happen to like your posts. CR4 would be less without you.

Each thread is like an ordinary conversation with friends.

Me and my friends would sometimes have a laugh when we discover that we'd started out on one topic, go into another and then another, ad infinitum. As happens with friends too, if someone finds the topic too boring or not to his liking, he either changes it or takes his leave (unsubscribe in a sense).

What I'm asking for is the ability to unsubscribe from a thread but still be informed if there's a reply to a post I made.

The thread can go on without me being informed of new additions but if a reply to my post is made, I should know about it.

To Del, I'm not talking about the e-mail alerts. I'm talking about the yellow box thing at the upper right of the main window and that gives us the number of updated threads. When you click on it, it shows you all your subscribed threads. If you've unsubscribed to a thread, that thread will no longer appear in the list.

One alternative is just to delete the daily CR4 e-mail if you are no longer interested. That would allow you to check as often as you like for obtaining some interest, responses and knowledge. Many of the "branching" or off-target responses are still full of some knowledge, and we can't be masters of every field and experience. Take Del the Cat, for example. I'd love to be able to sit with him for a few hours every week and explore various areas. There are many very knowledgable people on these responses!

I don't think you'd get much exploration of various areas. There would probably be too much demand for stroking to devolve into meaningful conversation.

Here's another workaround...

Create a mail filter that searches for the string "replying to vulcan" in the body of the text. Then send all those to a particular folder.

Send all your other CR4 mail to different folder. Then you can quickly & safely delete (without reading) all the emails pertaining to threads you have grown tired of wading through.

Hmm, I'll give you a good answer for that though I'm not sure if it's the perfect solution. As you say, it's a workaround until Mark (mgaulin) gets around to deciding whether he wants this or not. I'll give him a ring later. Thanks.

Maybe there is a case for moth-balling threads after a certain period of inactivity. It might be possible to automatically generate that "Closed to new comment" thing and also add a 're-generate question' button. ie if someones stumbles upon a dead' thread, clicking the button will take them to a modified 'Start a question/discussion' page, that will open with a link to the thread being considered. A 'new' thread is begun, but people can view the background to it. The automatically generated title could be something like "Widgets #2". Those previously subscribed could have their subscription re-activated. I'm probably adding to many bells and buttons on it, but something like that might be feasible.

I'm sure it could be done, but I don't really see the point. If a thread's inactive, it'll just sit there minding it's own business (won't it?).

You're probably right, but for some reason I try to keep subscribed discussions down to what I can view on a page. I try to delete PM's as I go but have about 30 pages of very old backlog I never got around to deleting (it's mixed with a few 'keepers). Even if the suggestion is not needed as such, having the a thread kick started again would put it on the new threads list - this would keep continuity and avoid repetition. A lot of people (myself included) don't always check for prior threads the same as an intended new one.

< you could be right, Del - maybe it's a coniving plan to keep bath alive !>

Actually there are a few potential threads here.

1. How many threads do you subscribe to?
2. Can we bulk delete mail whilst some how retaining the 'keepers'?
3. The Reactivate thingy that is already being discussed.

Go on Kris post sumat...you know you want to....cluck cluck cluck...chicken eh? Could be another Bath thread...goad... goad..poke.......meooowww.. scratch rub....generally irritate

'Minds me of a thread I started a while ago - How do you used CR4? - which rapidly veered OT (thanks to one or two of our better-known exponents of trivia ) - and was soon eclipsed by Garthh's Why do you use CR4? .

With my Subscribed Discussions list, I very rarely unsubscribe - I just let 'em pile up (now on 5th page). I always scan through those with New Comments - & mark new comments as Read (unless I want to leave one flagged for a more complete reply to something when I have more time). This generally leaves me with between 2 and 8 threads with new comments to scan through, morning and evening. Occasionally, someone revives an ancient thread, with an update, clarification or completion of a project, and it bubbles up to the top so I can have a look.

Works for me!

I'm far too bashful, and anyway, we'd have to spend several days saying "after you old chap" before either of us can do it. Even then, the person who goes first must form an orderly queue of one. We then proceed with simultaneous movement, and have to engage in the ritual of swapping 'Sorry's' as we collide. I suggest we follow the tradition of letting an American pinch the idea so we can indulge in a good winge about how we thought of it first.

Hmmm, perhaps.

I'd agree that starting a new thread is better than having the thread go off topic. However, that's not just what I'm thinking.

Maybe I find the thread still on topic but I've lost interest in it (over-discussed, in other words). I can unsubscribe but I'd still want to be informed if someone posts a reply to my post. Read: my post only.

I'd want to be able to make a counter-reply if necessary rather than letting the poster wait for me to get to it. If I unsubscribe, the only way he can let me know about it is through a private message. That might take time though if he assumes that I'm still monitoring the thread.

I share the feeling - it irks me that somebody might post a reply to me long after I've left a thread. Maybe one solution is to include some sort of add-on to your last post, but it would be confusing if you returned. Perhaps their could be two types of subscribing; The one we have, plus another type that only notifies of replies to yourself. I'd have thought that could be programmed as an add on filter to the existing mechanism (which notifies who is replying to who). A DIY method of doing this was suggested above (sorry, I forgot who you were whilst typing).
