TPI Inspector?

02/24/2008 8:31 AM

I have quite a bit of Double Submerged Arc Spiral Weld Pipe coming into the USA from India.

TPI is referenced on each pipe and the Inspector at Dock is called out as a TPI Inspector.

Any clues to what TPI would mean in this scenario?

I have checked http://www.acronymfinder.com/ and find nothing that relates to TPI in these circumstances.

Are there any numbers after or before the TPI? I would have gone for the turns per inch if it was spiral welded pipe but I am in no way an authority on the subject! Or could it be something to do with Tonnes Per Inch for pressure rating? Maybe a good idea to wait for more posts from people in the know!

The Pipe is 42" D x 0.555" W and is for a natural gas pipeline.

As to TPI stenciled on the pipe, there is a series of numbers of about 12 after the TPI.

I wonder if it is an Indian type on nomenclature.

Ach, so simple, it is Third Party Inspection. How dumb I feel right now.

This forum is so great, everyone working together and helping out, and Enviroman even loaned me his glass.

For the record, here is Welspun's API license.

I am proud India is exporting SW Pipes to U.S. Yes, it is Third Party Inspection (TPI) as it is manadatory for some of the engineering products exported from here. Such Inspection is carried out by SGS, Lyod, or any other recognised or Govt. Body.

Suresh, My assignment is directly with Kinder-Morgan, builder of the pipeline, but I am also working closely with Welspun, the manufacturer's V.P. of Operations here from Arkansas, USA.

This portion of the natural gas pipeline is 1410 Miles long and will interconnect with others to hopefully run from the Rocky Mountain gathering fields to New England states.

There will and has been DSAW Line Pipe coming in from other Indian Mills and being offloaded in several US Inland Ports.

Welspun has set up a brand new Spiral Weld Mill and Arkansas and should be soon supplying the US market directly.

HI, I dont know your real name. I live in Mumbai, H.O of Wellspun. I am glad to know you are working with them. I have been visiting your H.O frequently for selling E.O.T Cranes and Hoists for their Plant at Gujarat. It is very progressive company. They started with Towels for exports and now have diversified in steel industry. They export textiles to U.S. Good Luck to you and wish you bright future in your carrier.

TPI is the Third PArty Inspector who neither belongs to the purchaser nor to the seller.

If this pipe is to be used on a US pipeline I am amazed that it wasn't ordered in accordance with a specification recognized by the API or another cognizant organization. Buying pipe from overseas without a specification is mind boggleing since it is going to transport gas through residential areas. I hope someone is watching you!!

Get the material test reports which should include the standards under which it was manufactured as well as the material constituants and the results of the tensile tests which you should compare to the allowables of the standards your customer requires.

The Pipe is both API 5L, complete with Welspun's license on each as required, in addition to CSA and other International Standards. All MTRs, required stenciling per standards, and everything else is compliant with US norms. Cost effective Spiral weld pipe has been used internationally for years and only recently, the USA has realized this and received the necessary regulatory OKs. We have 3 Spiral weld Mills in USA now and 2 are ready to come on line soon, with Oregon Steel Mills there now and Welspun/Arkansas to start testing next month. The 3rd, in South Carolina, is a present mothballed, never having produced a pipe.

Believe me when I say, that any non compliant pipe would not pass our scrutiny.

It appears that TPI numerical designation is a cut above API and US standards allowing additional traceability.

Guest, please dont underestatement capablities of Indian mfrs. They produce international quality products as per Int.Standards. Your doubts are justifyable but Welspun is reputed mfr. with ISO certification. They wont export goods of substandard quality. Indian healthcare industry is also flourishing as they provide health care as per Int.Standards.That is why many Americans visit India of major treatment as it is much cheaper than U.S also safe.
