Unions for Engineers and Technologists

04/29/2005 1:41 PM

Would engineers be better off if we formed a broader based "union of engineers and technology workers"? Engineers at Boeing are organized into a union called SPEEA, Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace. Back in 2000 they went on strike with picket signs such as "No Brains, No Planes" or "No Nerds, No Birds". A broader based engineering union might provide collective bargaining against corporate abuses of engineers such as outsourcing to foreign countries, reduction of benefits/wages or firing technical workers just before retirement eligibility.

Not only do I think it would be good for Engineers, I think it would be good for our economy. How many times do experienced Engineers who bring real value to a company get laid off to avoid paying pensions, or because their salaries have become too high for the bean counters?
