I often read it in some entertainment articles as well. it seems to mean ' a group of people'? or a set of equipments ?

I think the real meaning is: when a gear is coupled with another one that spins, this gear will start to spin, too.

Therefore, I am gearing myself for studies would mean that I am coupling myself in this action, of studying.

My response would be something like:

Something or someone that is driven by or the driving force of something else.

Examples as stated above will all basically fit into this category.

A person who wears specific clothing for a specific purpose is wearing their gear which is driven by their desire to go hiking for instance I.E. Hiking gear. The same would hold true for any other kind of activity driven clothing.

Most machinery is driven by gears. Cars are driven by gears.

Ideas are driven as well. as in, "His thought process is geared to mathematics" or "His campaign is geared towards Healthcare".

Again these process are the driven or driving forces behind a particular idea or thought process or even principle behind someones ideology.

So "gear" is the driven or driving force behind something or someone or even a state of mind, to state it differently.

How does that work?

Best definition for GEAR? Hey! basically, it is the thing which "allows the continuity".

I was going to post a copy of it + an extract of why Wiki is often blocked, but one thing bothers me - If I did that, would it encourage them ( the Chinese Government) to ban CR4 ?? I don't know. Anything the Government know of and don't like seems to get banned, but unfortunately a lot of stuff that is just knowledge of engineering gets stopped by the effect of an overall blocking mechanism. Just mentioning certain words can direct internet traffic to their attention. Wiki is full of opinion, and probably contains too much political comment for their (China's) liking. Just recently, people for and against a particular British Police Officer have been fighting a running battle to keep altering his Wiki biography. I think they have now stopped that page from being altered while they decide what to do.

there are sereral ISP in our china, they are belong to different department of goverment, say, telecommunication, education, railway, traffic and broadcast system etc. there are some benefite conflict among them. so there are something wrong taking place time to time. haha,

if we hope to access their domain. you will meet some difficult. somtimes you have to apply some proxy to get it. a bit of trouble.

In fact most of science and education and tech web sites can be accessed without much trouble.

for example,

find gear, use gear, rental gear.

find a group of people who has same interest as you.

use these equipments,

reental these facilities etc.

all is not machine gear.
